Sights of North Ossetia: City of the Dead

This place consists of 99 crypts arranged in 4 floors. The buildings here are partially dug into the ground, and there are also ground buildings with a gable or pyramidal roof.

According to some historical information, this village was created during the outbreak of the plague. In those days, a family that was stricken by a terrible disease closed in one of the crypts and quietly waited for their fate.

Few people know that in those days, Ossetians considered getting into the crypt quite an expensive pleasure, so only a few could afford to die in this kind of room.

In this city, to this day, there is a terrible legend that disturbing the peace of the dead ancestors can pay with their lives. However, despite this, many tourists still come to scary place to see the crypts that still smell of death and pain of the dead Ossetians.

It should be noted that, of course, not all are solved, and only during daylight hours. Indeed, earlier this was a completely justified rumor, because it is not known how much more harmful bacteria could remain in the walls of the crypts. But to date, all the premises have been studied and researched in detail. Therefore, on this moment we can say with confidence that the crypts are absolutely harmless to visit.

This landmark of North Ossetia still excites the minds of tourists who have been there, because it is rather difficult to convey the emotions that you experience when looking at the crypts where innocent people once died painfully.

It should also be noted that on the territory of the City of the Dead there is the largest tower in Ossetia, named after the Mansurovs.

Gorges of North Ossetia

The main natural attraction of the republic is the gorges. They are not only cultural and historical monuments, but also attractive resorts with balneological springs, as well as places of rest for climbers and tourists.

Tseyskoe

Tsei Gorge - the pearl of the Caucasus. Climbers and skiers are attracted here by endless expanses of snow and steep slopes. In these parts it is sunny all day (the sun rises early and sets late).

Snow descents depend on the location of the area above sea level. The longest snow lies at an altitude of 3400 meters. Because of this, in different places Gorges uneven greenery. But the entire territory of the Tsey Gorge is rich in edible vegetation.

The air in the gorge has a healing effect. This is where it was built tourist complex for patients with tuberculosis and other diseases. Spending time in these parts, and breathing clean mountain air, patients quickly recover.

On the territory of the gorge there are sights and ancient monuments. There are many stories and legends associated with this place. The main attraction is the Rekom sanctuary. Unfortunately, as a result of a lightning strike, it lost its original appearance. The local population believes that it was the punishment of the Gods, as people stopped honoring their shrines.

Today there are many bases, hotels, cable cars. Along with the tour, you can look at the waterfalls, as well as raft down the mountain rivers. It has everything you need for an active holiday.

Karmadon

It is a beautiful and dangerous place at the same time. Even before the tragic events, the Karmadon Gorge was a favorite object among tourists. People came here to admire the majestic and beautiful mountain peaks, enjoy fresh air and green meadows. Climbers made an ascent to the Miley Glacier, stopped in a grotto where the Genaldon River originates.

An interesting fact - in 2002, due to the release of gases from the Kazbek volcano, a misfortune occurred. This volcano was inactive, but volcanic gases still gradually accumulated. Upon reaching a critical point, an explosion occurred, which led to the descent of the glacier. The strongest mud flow of the Kolka glacier collapsed down into the gorge. On this day, the film crew of Sergei Bodrov and more than a hundred people died.

Today, the area is slowly being revived, new roads are being built, and the territory is being cleared. Where there was a mudflow, there were huge blocks of stones and in some places dugouts of rescuers are visible. Close to the scene of the tragedy erected a memorial in honor of all who died in the gorge. Even despite the tragedy, many tourists come to the Karmadon Gorge, since such virgin and dangerous beauty can only be seen here.

Kurtatinsky

The road to the gorge leads through the most beautiful places. Here you can see Dzaurikau village located closer to the forest. Once upon a time, a small Tagardon stream flowed in these parts, but in 2002, due to heavy rains, it turned into a huge stream, which brought a lot of trouble.

The local area is famous for its caves. The most unique and interesting of them - Nyvzhinlagat cave (drawing cave). It is located on the slope of the ridge. Once upon a time, hunters hid here from bad weather.

In the gorge you can see many attractions, including the Wonder Trail. On the spur of the rocks, bridges were built, walking along which you can enjoy the amazing nature. This is very popular place among local residents and tourists who like to spend their leisure time quietly. Here, on the trail, you can see the sculpture "The Sword in the Stone." Kurtatin Gorge is a natural treasure of Alanya.

Cultural objects and sights

Of course, this is first and foremost majestic mountains and fast rivers. You can look at all these natural beauties endlessly, but besides them, there are many man-made sights in the republic. Moreover, they all look very organically against the backdrop of a picturesque landscape.

religious shrines

The republic is famous for its beautiful monasteries and temples, because the Orthodox faith appeared here back in the days of the Byzantine Empire. Popular shrines of the republic:

  1. Armenian Apostolic Church. The church of St. Gregory the Illuminator is located in Vladikavkaz on the banks of the Terek River. This is the only Armenian church in the city. The construction of the temple ended in 1863. The church operated even in Soviet times, but in the thirties it was almost destroyed. It received the status of a monument in 1960 and still receives parishioners.
  2. Sunni mosque. The mosque is located on the left bank of the Terek, namely at the foot of Table Mountain. The mosque is the main religious symbol and architectural monument of Vladikavkaz. Built in 1908. The second name of the mosque is the Mukhtarov Mosque. During the period Soviet Union there was a local history museum. In the 90s, it was given under the control of Muslims. Today, all believing Muslims are accepted here.
  3. Holy Assumption Monastery. Orthodox male monastery, which is located in the Alagir district. Founded by Bishop Feofan in 2000. This monastery is famous for the fact that it is considered the highest mountain in Russia. Services are held here in Church Slavonic and Ossetian languages.
