One hot day this June, when we were relaxing in Rhodes, I heard in the morning: “Listen, let's go to the Kallithea Baths today!”

"Thermae? I answered. – In this heat??? No!”

And she was wrong! Because these baths are not active, and the place definitely deserves a visit. Its other name is Kalithea Springs. About what it is and why you need to go there, I'll tell you.

Inactive beauty

In general, if briefly, then it was like this. At the beginning of the last century, there were active hot springs at this place (which, by the way, were known back in Ancient Greece). In 1929, the Italians, who at that time owned the island, built there very pretty baths or baths in the pseudo-Moorish style, which were used for their intended purpose for a long time.

But then an earthquake happened and the springs almost completely filled up, for a long time the complex was in disrepair, and then they began to restore it. Now it's just very beautiful place, which hosts exhibitions and is often rented for weddings, corporate parties, fashion shows and other similar events. They say that in the future, perhaps, the terms will be restored.

How to get to Kalithea Springs

First of all, it is important to understand that there is a village of Kalithea in Rhodes, and there is this point of Kalithea Springs, which is located on the coast. And the village lies a few kilometers from the sea.

Those who rent a car can drive directly to the entrance to the complex, those who travel by bus can conveniently go to the stop of the same name on the flights of the KTEL company, which serves that part of the island, but we, by tradition, went on foot, since this part travels were based in Faliraki, from which Kallithea Springs is about 6 km away.

We went and didn't regret it at all. At first, the path passes by hotels, but as soon as you leave the city, you find yourself in amazing beauty, where you can admire the sea from the rocks, and then walk through a beautiful coniferous grove where trees called pefki grow, better known to many as pines. It's quiet there, and there is an absolutely incredible aroma!

What's inside?

And so we reached the entrance to Kallithea Springs. Nearby there is parking, downstairs there is a small beach and a cafe. There are cash desks at the entrance, and then the beauty begins! A snow-white complex with rotundas, arches and passages, a floor lined with local khohlaki (or kohlaki) pebble mosaics, every now and then opening views of the sea, and a very picturesque garden with flowers and herbs. Very, very beautiful place!

The complex has a restaurant (not bad, with average prices), a free toilet and a tiny cove where you can swim, snorkel or just enjoy the views. Many people come to the bay on boats and swim around them.

There are several exhibitions inside the buildings. There are very interesting photographs that tell about the history of the term, mostly photos are from 50-60 years. Another exposition tells about the films that were filmed in this area. In addition, you can look at paintings and sculptures by contemporary artists (as I understand, this part is temporary exhibitions).

If you wish, you can spend the whole day there, walk, enjoy this dizzying air, dine and swim. When we were there, there were not too many people, so it was possible to calmly and comfortably inspect everything and relax, without rushing anywhere.
