The largest ships in the world

Description and dimensions of the largest ships that are afloat today.

Probably the largest ship in the history of mankind in terms of the use of usable space in the hold was Noah's Ark, and some sailboats in the last century exceeded the existing ones in size, but modern ocean monsters made of metal with a displacement of a small lake impress with their size, power or luxury. Mankind continues to build towers of Babel not only on land, but also on the sea.

To date, the largest ship in the world - Knock Nevis. This tanker is designed to transport fuel. Length 459 m, width - 24m. The ship's displacement is 565 thousand tons.

Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller is the world's largest container ship. Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller on July 15, 2013 left for its first flight. Its length is 400 meters, width - 59 meters, capacity - 18,000 containers, carrying capacity - 165,000 tons.

Its length is 400 meters, width - 59 meters, capacity - 18,000 containers, carrying capacity - 165,000 tons.

« Prelude"- the largest floating installation for the production and liquefaction of natural gas.

The vessel is 488 meters long, 78 meters wide, and has a displacement of 600,000 tons. It is assumed that the platform will move with the help of tugs. Only the absence of its own running gear does not allow Prelude to be called a champion among giant ships. The platform is still not a ship.

4 football fields located one behind the other shorter than the installation deck.

The 6 largest aircraft carriers have a total displacement corresponding to the displacement of the "Prelude",
93 meters - this is the height of the platform column.

« Nimitz"- the largest aircraft carrier in the world. Displacement - 106,000 tons. Its length is 333 meters. Height - 73 meters. Deck Width - 78 meters, thanks to which this giant can accommodate 64 aircraft and 26 helicopters). The crew of "Nimitz" has more than 3 thousand people.

By the way, the Nimitz aircraft carrier can be operated for twenty years without changing the energy source of the power plant. This means that it can be safely sent for this long period to long journey. The first aircraft carrier of this series was launched back in 1975.

Among the aircraft carriers of Europe and Asia, a ship stands out, named in honor of the great admiral of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, Kuznetsov. This giant is considered one of the most powerful and largest.

The largest warship in Russia is a heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser, named after the great admiral of the USSR Ministry of Finance, Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov. Perhaps outwardly it is inferior to American aircraft carriers, but the real power of the ship lies in the armament, means of protection and absolutely secret nuances of a warship. Let's hope we never find out which of these floating military airfields is the coolest. This can only be verified in real combat conditions.

Since ancient times, people have tried to conquer the water element. In their attempts, they improved watercraft and today they have something to boast about. Many ships reach truly gigantic sizes and compete for the championship of the largest. We offer a mini-rating of marine, but rather oceanic giants.

Long-term leader of the ocean expanses

By right, tankers and container ships are considered the largest ships. Until 2010, the title of "the largest ship in the world" was supertanker Knock Nevis . She was built at the Oppama shipyard in Yokosuka in 1975 and instead of a name she had only the number 1016. After launching, technical flaws were discovered and the Greek shipowners refused to accept. Long litigation, bankruptcy - and the ship has a new owner. Hong Kong tycoon Tung decided to modernize and increase the payload capacity (deadweight).

The renovated vessel with a length of more than 458 m could carry about 565 thousand tons of oil, and the name Seawise Giant appeared on board. However, its impressive size did not allow it to enter most ports and pass through the Suez and Panama Canals. In May 1986, a supertanker attacked an Iraqi fighter jet and it ran aground near the Iranian island of Larak. After that, it was repaired, changed its owners and names twice, served as a floating storage for crude oil. In January 2010, he was sent for disassembly.

Modern championship of container ships

The ship of the A.P. Corporation became the receiver of Knock Nevis. Moller Maersk Group container ship Emma Maersk . It was launched from the Lindoe shipyard in Denmark in 2006. An interesting fact is that during the final stage of construction, a fire started in the upper part of the ship. It cost several million dollars, but its consequences were eliminated in the shortest possible time.

The length of Emma Maersk is about 397 m, the width is 63.1 m. The crew of the giant is only 13 people. The carrying capacity of the vessel is about 123 thousand tons or more than 11,000 containers. If they are all lined up in a row, then its length will be 111 km. Loading can be carried out simultaneously by 12 giant cranes. Due to its impressive size, the Panama Canal was closed to the ship. His usual route: Southeast Asia - Suez Canal - Europe. In 2011, the Danish Mint released a 20 kroner coin featuring a container ship.

Further, the palm of leadership passed to the one launched from the South Korean shipyard in 2013 container ship Maersk Mc–Kinney Moller . It is named after the son of the founder of the transport company A.P. Moller Maersk Group. He became the first of 20 similar ones, its length is 400 m, the height is commensurate with a 20-storey building. Vessel speed - 23 knots. Its cost is estimated at 185 million dollars.

The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller is capable of carrying 18,270 20-foot ISO containers and would easily accommodate the famous Eiffel Tower on its deck. The containers are arranged in 23 rows, in height: 11 in the hold and 10 on the deck. This giant is managed by a team of 19 people. The vessel also has disadvantages:

  • so that the ship does not roll, the correct layout of the containers is important;
  • not all ports have cranes tall enough for a full load.

Pioneering spirit - area champion

The most spacious is catamaran Pioneering spirit . Its length is 382 m, so it could easily transport 4 Statues of Liberty at the same time. The width of the vessel is 124 m. Its creators claim that it is easy to accommodate a small one on the deck. The main task of the ship is the laying of underwater pipelines (to a depth of up to 3500 m) and the transportation of drilling rigs with a total weight of up to 48 thousand tons.

The ship project was developed by Finnish shipbuilding engineers commissioned by the Swiss company Allseas Marine Contractors. It was built at the shipyard in South Korea. Its final equipment was completed at the beginning of 2015 in Rotterdam. A 600-ton crane with an outreach of 20 m and 3 x 50 tons with an outreach of 33 m are installed on the deck. The cabins can accommodate 571 people.

The ship was originally to be named Pieter Schelte after the shipbuilder Peter Schelte Heerema, who was the father of the owner of Allseas Marine Contractors. However, after the fact of Peter's collaboration with the Nazis was revealed, the name was changed under public pressure. The vessel is operated under the Panamanian flag.

Oasis of the Seas - Passenger Giant

The length of the ship is 361 m, the maximum width is 60.5 m. The distance from the highest point to the surface of the water is 72 m. The hull of the ship consists of 480 thousand parts, its total weight is about 45 thousand tons. place.

Transportation of the vessel to the point of permanent residence is associated with interesting facts:

  • to pass under the Great Belt Bridge, connecting the Danish islands of Funen and Zealand, telescopic exhaust pipes had to be retracted;
  • in the Atlantic the ship reached top speed 24 knots (approximately 44 km/h).

Operated by Oasis of the Seas by Royal Caribbean International and makes regular routes in the Caribbean. 6400 passengers can travel on the liner.

It offers guests 18 decks with a variety of innovative curiosities and entertainment. Nature lovers are invited unique park, in which 56 trees and 12,000 exotic plants and shrubs are planted. The famous showman and TV presenter, returning from a cruise on Caribbean on board the world's largest ship, told "FACTS" about the miracle ship and its exotic route

The length of the 16-deck ship is about 361 meters, the width is 66 meters, and the height is highest point above the water line - 72 meters. “A dress that is sold in Kyiv for a thousand dollars can be bought in Miami for 150”

This is a real city with a huge number of boutiques, restaurants, discos, swimming pools, fitness and spa centers, - Andrei Dzhedzhula shares his impressions. - Grandiose aqua shows, ice performances are arranged on the ship. There is even a garden on board with about 12,000 plants. Beautiful place! Every morning you wake up in a different part of the planet.

What was your itinerary?

Started from Miami. They did some shopping there first, as some of my friends lost their luggage. I never expected that everything that is so expensive in Ukraine can be so cheap there. For example, a dress that is sold in Kyiv for a thousand dollars can be bought in Miami for $150.

After the shops, we went to the port and, having checked in, got on board the ship - and much faster than you usually get on the plane. But about six thousand people were registered! Everything is thought out: everywhere there are separate exits and entrances - depending on the location of the cabins on the liner. First stop - the pirate island of St. Thomas ( Virgin Islands). The pirate theme is reflected here on all souvenirs. Very beautiful beaches. Huge-ohm imposing iguanas crawl by the water! And so they strive to get under their feet. I even fed them. Then they moored to the island of Saint-Martin, divided between the French and the Dutch. Half of the population on it with French passports, the other half - with Dutch documents. And the island itself is the size of our Brovary (laughs). There are a lot of tourists here, so the prices for souvenirs are exorbitant.

You are an experienced traveler. I wonder what shocked you this time?

The first shock, of course, was the ship itself. A huge football field, a basketball court, a stadium for lovers of morning jogging, climbing slides, for extreme sports - a simulator of a tall surf wave in the pool, a "bungee" on which you soar ten floors down in free flight

I read that the ship is equipped with the latest technology.

This is true. Everything is thought out to the smallest detail, ultra-modern elevators are everywhere, including for the disabled. One of the passengers was completely motionless. Neither his legs nor his arms worked, the man did not part with the catheter and oxygen mask. He guided his wheelchair with the help of a special device ... in the pupil. By the way, there were a lot of travelers in electric chairs.

How long does it take to go around the whole ship?

I confess that in a week I did not bypass it! Although he was constantly on the move.

On such a huge liner, you can probably get lost

No no! At every step, a "virtual guide" is installed in the form of an electronic model of the ship. You press a button or enter a word, and it becomes clear where you are at the moment or how to get from point A to point B.

Did you feel like you were not on a ship, but on land?

Yes, there was no pitching at all. You can put a glass on the table and it will not budge even a millimeter, the handle will not roll. Only once did the ship shake a little when we sailed off the coast of Haiti, where an earthquake was taking place. Overboard at that time there was a terrible storm, but we felt only a slight vibration.

Are the cabins on the ship luxurious?

Nothing extraordinary, but very comfortable, there are even two-story apartments. I took a cabin with a sea view. There were also so-called "to the courtyard", that is, overlooking the garden. Each cabin has a TV. One channel constantly broadcasts in real mode the view from the bow of the ship.

“Ordering a limousine in New York is cheaper than taking several taxis for a large company”

How were you fed, anything special?

They prepared different dishes, probably the whole world cuisine was presented! The ship employs personnel from 80 countries. The “floating bar” is very unusual, which smoothly rises up and then falls down. Reminds me of a flying saucer.

Probably, in this you can get drunk in no time.

Yes (smiles). People drank there all the time.

In luxury hotels, guests often make nice gifts. Did they give you something?

Only one passenger received a gift. He lost 100 thousand dollars in a casino, and he was presented with four vouchers for this liner.

How for what? Valuable passenger! This one will play again and again.

By the way, how much did the trip cost you?

Expensive, not one thousand dollars. On the liner, however, cash was not needed at all. You pay for everything with a credit card. By the way, you enter it into the terminal when you leave the ship and when you return. This system is thought out so that none of the passengers is forgotten on the shore, not lost. True, if a person does not appear on the ship on time, several thousand people are unlikely to wait for him.

What did you buy as a memento of the trip?

Fridge magnets - nothing special.

And what struck you in Nassau?

Nassau is the place of the port "registration" of so many liners. There just aren't any! Even the Disney ship exists for families with children. Our liner, of course, stood out for its size. He was taller than everyone else.

Did you return on the same route?

We didn't stop at all on the way back. Exactly one day took the road to Miami, from there we flew to New York. True, they experienced stress there: they reported that the Kennedy airport was mined. We were not let out of the plane for three hours. When, finally, everyone left, they decided to make themselves happy: they ordered a limousine - it's cheaper than taking several taxis for a large company. In New York taxis, it is often forbidden to ride in the front seat. A special partition made of impenetrable glass separates the driver from passengers. This is due to the fact that taxi drivers are often attacked. Given this situation, two or three people are placed in a taxi, and there were eight of us. And we fit in the limousine.

We also enjoyed the best sushi in the world in New York - huge, like our chops, from the freshest fish, with a minimum of rice. What else? We visited the museum where the film "Night at the Museum" was filmed, went to the Broadway musical "The Phantom of the Opera", walked along Wall Street, took a helicopter tour over New York, wandered around the shops a little.

In a word, we had a great rest.
