Tsandripsh (the old name of the village is Gantiadi) is a quiet and cozy resort on the Black Sea, located just 5 km from the Russian-Abkhazian border. A small and unpretentious Abkhazian place is especially in demand among those who prefer to make a tour by car on their own. Thanks to convenient transport interchanges and the nearby Sukhumi highway, even for an inexperienced traveler it will not be difficult to quickly get to any settlement in the republic.
Tsandripsh used to be enough popular resort. Vacationers from all over the USSR came here in search of a calm and measured recreation among palm trees, cypresses, magnolias and oleanders. Today, after a long decline, the tourism business is gradually gaining momentum, every year more and more campsites, boarding houses and sanatoriums open in the village. Living in the private sector with hospitable and friendly hosts who rent out their housing for a nominal fee has not lost its relevance.

The history of the development of Tsandripsh

The settlement was famous throughout the Caucasus as one of the largest and richest ports, which was visited daily by ships carrying goods from the Crimea, Constantinople and other Black Sea cities. Merchants came here to participate in fairs and buy honey, wax, utensils, quality fabrics and clothes from local residents. Historical twists and turns contributed to the extinction, then the revival of the village, which eventually became part of the Russian village of Pilenkovo, and took on its territory one of the bloodiest battles during the struggle to establish the power of the Soviets.
The modern heyday of Tsadripsh fell on the 50s of the 20th century. The village grew, the production of tobacco and wine began to develop, large houses appeared, shops, cafes and cinemas opened. The surface of the water is emerald-azure in color, snow-white tops of the waves are visible on the horizon, and in the daytime a pleasant and refreshing breeze filled with iodine particles blows in your face.
The gentle sun quickly heats up the coastal pebbles, so swimming in the sea and air baths can be started from the very early morning. Peace and quiet gives the sound of the surf, and in the water area you can watch fishing boats or frolicking dolphins.
At the service of tourists - rental of jet skis, parachutes and catamarans, beach accessories: sun loungers and umbrellas, mattresses, vests. Scuba divers and snorkellers have chosen wild beach of extraordinary beauty called "White Rocks" with crystal clear water and underwater world that strikes the imagination of even the most experienced diver. Formed by the outcropping of layers of marble, the rocks perfectly reflect sunlight, and therefore the tan here lies especially evenly.

Attractions Tsandripsh

A stay in the village will appeal to lovers of excursions. Tsandripsh, its shrines and sights are known far beyond the borders of Abkhazia: historical monuments, temples, monasteries, ruins of ancient fortresses and basilicas, natural parks, delightful canyons, picturesque estuaries.
In the center of Tsandripsh is the main historical monument region - a temple of the VI-VIII centuries. Built of voluminous limestone blocks and decorated with carved marble elements, the sanctuary has been well preserved to this day. Nearby are the remains of the fortress walls and the foundation of the ancient city of Tsandripsh, as well as a cemetery with tombs of the 6th-11th centuries.
Near the sea, you can admire the Gantiada Basilica, built in the 6th century. AD The vaults, partly the walls and the font for the Christian rite of baptism have survived to our time. The temple is decorated with a large amount of Turkish marble and was considered one of the largest religious monasteries in which Abkhazia is rich. Tsandripsh was actively destroyed during the Middle Ages, in the vicinity of the village there is a unique Khashup fortress, perfectly preserved to this day. Powerful walls with quadrangular towers served as a good defense for the local population, who took refuge there from enemy raids.
Throughout Abkhazia, the sights of Tsandripsh are represented by an impressive variety of objects, including those of natural origin. A small, only 5,000 inhabitants, Tsandripsh village in the Gagra district of Abkhazia is older than half of the world's capitals. Already in the first millennium BC. e. the future resort was chosen by the ancient tribes, who were replaced by the Romans, and then the descendants of the future Abkhazians. As a memory of themselves, they all left a few buildings scattered around the village and its environs.

Over time, Tsandripsh, alas, did not grow; even its popularity among the Soviet elites (one of Stalin's favorite dachas stands nearby) did not turn the village into a resort on a national scale. Today it is still modest in size, not too rich in tourist infrastructure, but it is green, cozy and good for health.

Tsandripsh is perfect for a leisurely budget holiday. Yes, and to the Russian border is only 5 km, a passport is not needed. The only negative (however, who cares) is the exclusively pebbly entrance to the sea. But if you have safety shoes, you quickly forget about it.

A bit of history

In the middle of the first millennium A.D. e. Tsandripsh (then called Sauchi) was the capital of the Principality of Sanigia. It is believed that Malaya Abkhazia was born here. In the 19th century, a Russian village was founded nearby, which then merged with the Abkhaz one. During the Russian rule (until the end of the Great Patriotic War), the city was called Yermolovsk, and then, before perestroika, Gantiadi. It is under this name that many Soviet-style tourists know Tsandripsh today.

Transport

On a regular public transport, working from early morning until late at night, you should not count on Tsandripsh. Yes, several minibuses run here, but only their drivers know when and where. Along the roads there are signs "Bus stop", but you can slow down public transport with a wave of your hand there - most likely, the attempt will be crowned with success.

If you need to return from somewhere in the evening, the only option is a taxi. Price short trip on average, it will cost 100 RUB when calling by phone. "Bombila", "caught" on the road, can request three times more. Prices on the page are for September 2018.

Bicycles are available for rent and there is nowhere to ride them. You can go to Sukhum for a car or pick it up directly at the Psou checkpoint: there is a chance to get a Nissan X-Trail or Mercedes-Benz C-class for 2000 RUB / day with a rental of 7 days or more.

It is forbidden to leave the territory of Russia on a rental car!

Tsandripsh Hotels

Homely cozy Tsandripsh welcomes vacationers almost exclusively with guest houses and mini-hotels without any "stars". However, they have everything you need: free Wi-Fi and parking, breakfast only meals (you can also arrange for full board), TV, barbecue facilities, the distance to the beach is within a kilometer, and somewhere even billiards , sauna or bath. As for the air conditioner, you need to clarify additionally, in extreme cases, you can ask for a fan.

The average cost of a room in a guest house or mini-hotel is 1000 RUB (there are also 550 RUB), many of them work only on a prepaid basis, but it is better not to pay more than 30% of the amount before check-in.

If you want something more luxurious and expensive, you can rent a room at the 4 * Eucalyptus Coast hotel, the pleasure will cost 4500 RUB (the price includes a free transfer, the hotel has a swimming pool), or rent a villa on the seashore with two bedrooms and a living room for 9000 RUB/night.

Beaches

There is no need to specifically look for beaches or drive several kilometers to them in Tsandripsh. Went ashore - and here it is, the beach. Incredibly long and wide, closer to the forest and the road coarse sandy, and near the water large and small pebbles. The purest blue Black Sea is attached (may be cloudy after a storm).

The beach is free, closer to the center there are rental points for umbrellas and sunbeds (from 100 RUB / day), as well as air mattresses and jet skis (from 300-1000 RUB / day).

For families with children, the local coast is perfect: the entrance to the water is gentle, the most daring are invited to ride a "banana". But most of all, the dolphins delight the children, which are often shown and sometimes swim quite close.

You need to watch the children carefully: literally a couple of meters from the entrance to the water immediately goes a great depth.

The most beautiful part of the beach is located a little away from the village, between it and Gagra. It is called the White Rocks, because huge boulders of the color of snow stick out here and there from under the crumbling pebbles, the same rocks surround a small beach. This is the largest marble outcrop in Abkhazia. Dozens of vacationers come to admire the "rocks" every day.

What to bring

In a tiny village there are no interesting shops, and even more so - shopping centers. All the joy is the local market. From edible souvenirs, without which you should not leave there - natural honey, jam, incredible cheese, multi-colored placers of fragrant spices and herbs. If you get caught, you can grab a eucalyptus broom and Abkhazian black or green tea.

Local products made from sheep and goat wool are very popular with visitors: mittens, socks, cloaks, as well as clay and wooden handicrafts. From the first, jugs for wine will be an original reminder of the trip, from the second - coasters for hot and all kinds of kitchen utensils. Another iconic Abkhazian souvenir is a cezve for brewing coffee. True lovers of an invigorating drink will appreciate it.

Cuisine and restaurants of Tsandripsh

The word “restaurants” does not really fit the establishments of Tsandripsh: they do not have luxurious interiors, exquisite drinks and outlandish dishes on the menu. But the food is very delicious.

The basis of Abkhazian dishes is meat, fish, eggs, dairy and sour-milk products. Of the vegetables, cabbage, eggplant and tomatoes are held in high esteem. They know how and love to cook beans and all kinds of cereals here.

Those who want to taste the local “delicacies” should order thick mamalyga porridge, juicy shish kebab, eggplants stuffed with nuts and herbs, and, of course, hot adjika. From drinks - house wine and unimaginably tasty lemonades.

Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are offered by numerous canteens - most of them are in the center. A complex lunch for two will cost 800 RUB, a snack from a small khachapuri with a glass of lemonade - 100 RUB per person. From establishments high level guests of Tsandripsh recommend "Caucasus" on the street. Lenin. Dinner for two with alcohol in it will cost about 2000 RUB.

Entertainment and attractions

In general, people go to Tsandripsh not in search of unique architectural structures or museums with a set of wonderful artifacts. The sea, intoxicating air, natural beauty - that's the main thing. But also for those who miss sightseeing vacation, will be something to do.

In the very center of the resort stands its main curiosity - a perfectly preserved 5th century basilica. They say that earlier babies were baptized in it, the dead were seen off on their last journey, and services were held. Today, excursions do not lead here, but to see it unusual building definitely worth it.

5 km from the village, in the beautiful gorge of the Khashupse river, there is another ancient building - the Khashup fortress (43.429725, 40.12305). It is believed that the ancient Romans erected it at the very beginning of the first millennium AD. e. Time has worked hard on the once formidable citadel, but the outlines of the fortress in the ruins overgrown with grass are still guessed. By the way, the Khashupse river itself is also a miracle how good it is - its canyons are especially picturesque.

Of the modern sights, it is worth noting Stalin's dacha in the Cold River, 4 km from Tsandripsh (43.364761, 40.118183). Not only excursion groups are allowed there, but also "savage" travelers. The caretakers willingly tell fictional stories about one of the leader's favorite dachas, as well as about himself.

Of the entertainment in Tsandripsh - not very noisy discos, boat trips and rafting. In the village and its environs, three mountain rivers flow at once, flowing into the Black Sea, but the trouble is that in some areas it naturally dries up in the heat, so there is no time for rafting.

Acquaintance with the rich history of hospitable Abkhazia can be continued on excursions to Gagra, New Athos, Pitsunda or to Lake Ritsa. You can visit there both on your own, setting off on a journey in a rented car or minibus, or as part of a tour group that gathers in all the villages on the coast.

Weather

Tsandripsh - a typical resort village Black Sea coast: the air temperature here rarely drops below zero even in the dead of winter, and in summer it is hot, which is only slightly compensated by the breeze. The tourist season lasts from May to October, but August may not be the most successful for a holiday: weather forecasters frighten with an abundance of precipitation. Plus, the last month of summer is considered the hottest.

The difference between day and night temperatures is sometimes significant: even in June-August, you should take a warm jacket to the resort, and in spring and autumn, take a jacket altogether.

The Black Sea begins to accumulate heat in May and releases it for a very long time: even in early October, the water temperature remains comfortable for swimming.

Tsandripsh is a very small settlement. Even if we take into account the neighboring village of Gyachrypsh, which, in fact, is one with the village, the total housing stock will be much less than in other resorts on the coast. Therefore, it is better to decide on the place of residence in advance by booking it before arrival. The village does not large hotels, sanatoriums or recreation centers. All areas are provided by private individuals. These are specially built guest houses or renting out standard housing units of local residents. But the level of service here, oddly enough, is higher than in the same Gagra. Most likely, the influence of nearby Russian resorts, forcing "to keep the brand." The prices of 2020 allow us to attribute Tsandripsh to inexpensive resorts. All rental properties are located along coastline, so it can also be called the advantage of the village.

How to get there

The village is located in the westernmost part of Abkhazia on the border with the Russian Federation. It was built in a valley formed around the course of the Khaushpse River, which flows into the Black Sea here. Between the village and the neighboring village of Gyachrypsh, another river flows - Lapsy, and on the border with Russia, the Psou River. Thus, the water near the coast of the village is very much renewed due to mountain rivers and therefore is quite clean.

The Sukhumi highway passes through the village - the main transport corridor to get to Tsandripsh. It is most convenient to get here by car. Rail connection there are also trains in the village, but there are not many trains, and they do not run all year round, from May to October. From the Russian side, it is best to go to the village through Adler. Both from the railway station and Sochi airport, you can get to the village by minibus or taxi. Just 5km from the border. Moreover, when choosing a taxi, it is better to take it with Abkhaz numbers, it will be cheaper.

General information, history

Officially, Tsandripsh is today an urban-type settlement. In various sources, the name can also be written as "Tsandrypsh", in fact - this is the same thing. In Soviet times, the village was called Gantiadi, and many still use this name. Currently, about 5,000 people permanently live in the village.

The territory of the village was inhabited in ancient times. She is considered historical center Little Abkhazia. This is confirmed by the many ruins of ancient buildings that can still be seen in the village today. The first official settlement appeared here in 1867. It was laid down by the Russians. The name of the village comes from the Abkhazian clan Tsanba.

Today, rest in Tsandripsh is considered to be a family holiday. Life here is more measured and calm. From the point of view of the entertainment industry, it is difficult for the village to compete with Adler or Sochi, and this is not necessary. local nature and the sea so will attract their vacationers. To this you can add the Abkhaz flavor and low prices.

Things to do

Rest in Tsandripsh can be compared with sightseeing tour on the history of Abkhazia. The key must-see attraction is the Khashup fortress. This is a fortification of the 8th century, which has been well preserved to this day. It is located in the channel of the Khashupse River, a couple of kilometers from the village. And right on the territory locality the Tsandripsh temple or basilica of the 4th century is located. This is an ancient baptismal with the tombs of the relics of the martyrs.

For those who are more important leisure, you can recommend trying your hand at rafting - rafting on mountain rivers, of which there are three in the village. And of course, the very nature of the Caucasian coast, with its riot of colors of outlandish flora. Just wandering around the village will be not only exciting, but also very useful.

Beaches

local beaches can be called the widest on the entire Caucasian coast. They can reach depths of up to 200m. This is due to the fact that mountain range somewhat removed from the coastline. The beaches are mostly covered with large and small pebbles, so slippers will be highly desirable. The total length along the sea is about 6 km, i.e. the entire built-up residential area of the village overlooks one or another section of the beach. All beaches are equipped with a well-developed service industry. The bottom is quite flat, although there is no special shallow water. Near the village there is a wild beach, which the locals call "White Stones" because of the white rock formations that formed this place.

Latest reviews about holidays in Tsandripsh

Stayed here for over a year. We liked everything very much, we plan to come again. Home atmosphere, cozy like home. The hosts are very kind, our requests and wishes were not left unattended. In the summer of 2019 it was cool, so they brought us blankets)))
Thank you for the warm welcome, we will definitely visit you again

Very late, but still, finally, I fulfill my duty to this wonderful family and their new guests - I am writing a review about an unforgettable vacation in this house! I could not get myself together in any way, as I completely went headlong into children and work, immediately upon returning home. Such was the period in life. Now, on vacation, I sincerely want to make up for my shortcomings on this issue)
A year and a half has passed, and a three-week vacation with Aunt Valya and Uncle Garik still warms the heart with memories!
I rested in Tsandripsh with a one-year-old daughter, the eldest daughter, 9 years old, was nearby in a sports camp. I was looking for housing especially near the camp, so that sometimes I could meet with my eldest daughter. In the middle of our vacation, my husband joined us and the three of us lived with Valentina and Garik. All previous reviews are absolutely true - the family welcomes guests like relatives! Valya has perfect cleanliness, order and comfort everywhere.
The hosts warmly welcome guests, every day they think about how people can be nourished with warmth and care during their holidays. I want to come back to this house again and again.
For a modest fee, the hosts provide guests with cozy, clean, bright rooms. All the comforts of home, shower, washing machine. Convenient kitchen for fresh air, with all necessary utensils. With a one-year-old child, I have never needed anything. When my home blender broke down, Valya immediately brought me hers! For example. There are so many little things like that. The owners, if necessary, took us to the market and to the children's store! They tried to help in everything, prompt and make our vacation carefree!
When we first arrived, it was low season and there were few guests. Closer to July, the house was 100% full, but everyone was comfortable together, thanks to the hospitable hosts, the guests were friends and communicated with each other in a mode that was comfortable for each family.
The hosts put on amazing evenings of dancing and talking over dinner. They have wonderful grandchildren who sometimes dance national dances for guests. They also make an excellent company for small guests. My baby was constantly surrounded by the attention and care of Milan and Emil, the grandchildren of Valya and Garik.
Thank you to the whole family for our wonderful holiday and your hospitality! If back to Abkhazia, then only to you!!!

Thanks for the rest Comrade Anya, village Serezha and Gayane. All liked it. The first time we were in Abkhazia, I chose a place for a long time and did not regret it. Many families have been coming here for decades. This speaks volumes. We will definitely come again. I recommend you come.

Hello everybody!!! The whole family of 7 stayed with these wonderful and friendly people. Two children and five adults. The atmosphere is as if you grew up and was born there, everything is so homely and cozy. The rooms are very clean, there is air conditioning, shower and toilet right in the room, TV, WF, a tangerine garden struck with its beauty, a huge summer kitchen with gas stoves, refrigerators, TV. There is a lot of space for evening gatherings, a barbecue, skewers, coal, everything is there, everything is so cozy and beautiful, just super. The hosts are very, very hospitable, just great. It feels like you've known them all your life. As for the sea, it is clean, no poisoning, the children drank sea water and nothing happened, no one got poisoned or got sick. To the sea exactly 5 minutes walking distance. Just a lot of shops, there is a wonderful dining room, you can order shish kebab and smoked trout directly to your home through the owners, very convenient. We ordered an excursion, in a Mitsubishi jeep, in general, a class. Children are delighted. By the way, the tour was ordered from the owners, as they say, everything is in one place. They have a family business. Well done. The most impressive trip is the Geg waterfall, I just advise it is very cool, it is so huge when you look up at the waterfall, your head is spinning. Yes, at the expense of the sea in September it is warm, the beach is pebble. We will definitely go there and to this guest house "Svetlana". I really want to thank these wonderful and kind people for their hospitality, thank you. By the way, we were met at the border by car and also taken back, very convenient. There is even a dog named "Zeus" as a native. My family and I can't wait to go there again. We will definitely be back in 2020. I recommend this guest house to everyone. Thanks for all!!!

We have been resting with Zhanna and Igor for more than a year, but before we can leave, we want to go back (before reaching the border, by the way). The atmosphere is so cozy and homely that during the winter my niece constantly says that she should go live with Aunt Zhanna and Uncle Igor. Thank you for our unforgettable vacation, we are waiting for the summer and again to you!

Tsandripsh (Abkhazia), photographs of which can be found on many popular tourist sites, is a resort village in the Gagra region, 5 km from the border with Russia. The village is located on the 1st coastline of the Black Sea coast, at the mouth of the Khashupse River.

Near Tsandripsh is the village of Leselidze and the village of Kheivani. Borders and divisions between beach areas there are no settlements, so the village of Tsandripsh is perceived by tourists as a segment of the large tourist area Bolshaya Gagra.

History of the village

The small village of Tsandripsh has a long and rich history. The rich life of the region in the 1st century is evidenced by the finds of archaeologists - well-preserved bronze axes were found on the territory. In the 6th century, the place became the capital of the whole principality of Sanigiya, and later the historical center of the province of Sanzen.

Merchant ships arrived in the former capital of Lesser Abkhazia, active bidding and transactions were carried out at the pier. Precious metals, fabrics, jewelry, wines, honey, exquisite oils and leather were brought from the Crimea to Abkhazia. Today, only the ruins of ancient temples and defensive structures testify to the former greatness.

The turning point for the village was the formation in 1867 of the Russian settlement of Pilenkovo and the mass migration to the territory of Armenians hiding from the genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

With the advent of the USSR, the village got another new name - Yermolovka. But it did not last long, quickly changed to Gantiadi and, then, to modern Tsandripsh. Modern name came from the surname of the ancient princely family of Tsanba, who owned lands along the Black Sea coast for several centuries.

The population of the village is just over 5,000 inhabitants. Most of the population is Armenian by nationality, and about 900 Russians and Abkhazians also live in the village.
