Historical feature of the valley. Previously, the Ziller was a border river separating the lands of the Habsburgs and the Salzburg episcopate. After the administrative annexation of the valley to Tyrol, only part of the parishes west of Ziller passed to the bishopric of Innsbruck, and the parishes east of Ziller remained with the Salzburg bishopric. Zillertal Arena is a ski region stretching east from the town of Zell am Ziller (Zell im Zillertal, 580 m) and part of a larger association of resorts in the Zillertal valley (with a total of about 500 kilometers of slopes). The arena, in turn, combines four separate areas with connected slopes and lifts, you can move between them on 143 kilometers of slopes without removing your skis, which provides excellent opportunities and options for ski safari. The size of the zone is already indicated by the fact that the distance from edge to edge in a straight line is twenty kilometers, to say nothing of the distances along the ski slopes.
The slopes of the region are predominantly geared towards intermediate and beginner skiers, with little in the way for experts, although a new 2 km long black run is available as of the 2015 season, descending directly into Zell am Ziller. The region has a successful combination of forest and open trails, for any weather, as they say: in case of fog, you can go down into the forest to have at least some landmarks. For fans of off-piste skiing, the opportunities, although not outstanding, are also interesting, mainly in the Königsleiten sector.
Russian skiers usually settle and ski in the neighboring Mayrhofen and, perhaps, they lose sight of the Zillertal Arena in vain: there are more slopes here, they are longer, there are significantly fewer skiers, which means there are practically no queues for the lifts. Therefore, unless you are a fan of incendiary Mayrhofen parties, feel free to choose the Arena, here, as a minimum, it is no worse. Yes, nightlife as such, no, but does everyone go to the mountains for this? On the contrary, there are many lovers of pastoral silence; in Zell am Ziller they will just rest their souls and enjoy communion with nature and local residents who are very kind and welcoming. It is worth noting that in general it is also not a very expensive resort by ski standards. For those interested in additional sports entertainment, there is also a skating rink with artificial ice, toboggan run, tennis courts, and in neighboring Fügen - a large Erlebnistherme thermal complex.

Zell am Ziller is 22 kilometers and 20 minutes away by car from the entrance to the Ziller Valley and from the highway connecting the capital of Tyrol Innsbruck with Munich and Salzburg. You can also live in Gerlos (Gerlos, 1300 m) and Königsleiten (Königsleiten, 1600 m), located in the depths of the ski area towards the famous Krimml waterfall. Traditionally, Russian tourists, choosing the Zillertal Arena, settle in Zell am Ziller, from which the most convenient access (by bus and railway) to other ski areas of the Zillertal. It is worth noting that the Ziller hotels are mostly located at a distance from the main lift and to get to it, you will have to make a short trip on the ski bus. Also note that, like most of the towns of the Zillertal, Zell am Ziller is located low, at an altitude of 580 meters, which means that there is a high probability that there will be no snow in the city itself in winter. However, this does not apply to the ski area itself, whose heights up to 2500 meters guarantee good snow cover during the season, and it is also believed that the region has quite heavy snowfalls.
If you are not a skier-snob, prefer a variety of interesting skiing to noisy parties, be sure to pay attention to the Zillertal Arena.
