Cote d'Azur riviera on the map. Côte d'Azur: what you need to know before you go

Route 07.08.19 27 626 27

The Côte d'Azur is considered one of the most expensive resorts in the world. But if you plan your trip correctly, you can relax on the coast at the price of a trip to Turkey.

I spent on Cote d'Azur two weeks. During this time I traveled to Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez and Toulon and small pretty towns on the coast, such as Antibes. They are only gaining popularity among tourists, so the prices there are moderate. The apartment cost 45 € (3240 R) per day, and food cost 13 € (936 R) per day. Moving between cities is also fast and inexpensive.

🏙️ Cote d'Azur resorts

You can travel along the coast for several months in a row. I'll tell you about a few cities that I remember the most.

Nice impossible to see in one day. You want to stay in the city for a week, even if there are no clear plans: just walk the streets, the Promenade des Anglais and admire the sea.

The old city of Nice is similar to Italy with its yellow walls and orange roofs. It is crowded and atmospheric: if you take away all the trendy cafes, the area looks like a medieval one.

Eight kilometers from the center of Nice, at an altitude of 370 meters, there is an observatory. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour. English language. They are held on Wednesday and Saturday from 14:30. Tour guides enthusiastically talk about the stars, the sky and their own research. I'm not into astronomy, but even I was interested.

If you do not speak English, I still advise you to go to the observatory. From the territory observation platform offers a view of the famous curved coast of Nice, which resembles a sickle.

A ticket to the observatory costs 6 € (432 R), they are sold on the spot or on the official website. Bus number 84 goes there from the city center, the fare will cost 1.5 € (108 R).

Other viewpoint Nice is located on Castle Hill. From there, the embankment and the city as a whole are clearly visible. To climb to the site, you need to go along the Promenade des Anglais towards the port. On a hot day, the climb can seem endless, so it's best to use the free lift.

Cannes. During the day it's normal tourist town, on which tourists lazily walk in shorts or swimsuits. But in the evening the city changes. On the Boulevard de la Croisette you can catch the aroma of expensive selective perfumes, and on the waterfront there are parties on yachts.

There are few attractions in Cannes: an observation deck, a castle and a port with yachts, which everyone enters like a museum. Another famous place in the city is the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival takes place every year. If no event is planned in the near future, the building looks ordinary. But you can still go there: look at the hall where the awards are presented, and wander along the corridors. The ticket costs 6 € (432 R) and is sold on the website of the palace.

You can look down on the city from the observation platform next to the Church of Our Lady Good Hope which was built in the 17th century. I climbed on foot and did not regret it: I saw deserted streets and atmospheric lanes.

In general, it seemed to me that a day is enough for Cannes. Then it is better to find a hotel in a more affordable and less noisy city.

Antibes is a cozy little town between Nice and Cannes. If you walk around the old center in the evening, it may seem that there are no people in the city. But in fact, everyone, from young people to groups of stylish grandparents, sit in bars and restaurants.

In Antibes, the ancient Fort Carré has been preserved, where Napoleon was imprisoned in his youth. The fort was built in the form of a four-pointed star and is located in a park area. From the top you have a view of the city and the sea. You can go inside only as part of an excursion, a ticket costs 3 € (215 R) and is sold on the spot. Even if you do not want to enter the fort, I advise you to wander around its powerful walls: Carré looks impressive.

Another popular attraction in Antibes is the Pablo Picasso Museum. It is located in the building where the artist lived and painted for several months. That period of creativity was short, but fruitful for Picasso. The artist donated many works to the city, and they laid the foundation for the museum. Entrance costs 6 € (432 R), tickets are sold on the spot.

In Saint Tropez there are pine trees, and different beaches, and a promenade with yellow buildings. Looking at the photos, I feel like I've been to at least three different places.

Most people come to Saint-Tropez to stay up late and wake up late. This is a city of fun, parties and noisy bars, which became popular after the release of the film "And God Created Woman" with Brigitte Bardot.

In Saint-Tropez, you can see and photograph the 18th century church of Eglis Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. Its yellow and pink bell tower is featured on most of the postcards in the souvenir shops of Saint-Tropez. The church stands out in size against the background of small and low houses, but it seemed to me that in the photographs it looks better than in reality.

In October, the famous throughout Europe parade of Porsche cars takes place in the city. On it you can see rare models of cars driven by stylish European grandparents. Festival dates are listed on the official website.

Port Grimaud was built in the sixties of the last century. Land in the swamps was of no interest to developers, but one ambitious French architect found a way out and designed a city on the water. Twenty small islands, fourteen bridges and private boats near each house - this is the whole of Grimaud. You can only move here on foot or by boat along the canals, which is why the city is called the French Venice.

Toulon is located 150 kilometers from Nice, almost at the very end of the western part of the Cote d'Azur. The navy is based there, so sometimes you can see not only yachts, but also harsh warships. By French standards, this is a large city.

Toulon seemed unpredictable to me. There are many small streets and alleys in the old center, and each time I did not know what would be around the corner. Sometimes a small and unremarkable street ran into a beautiful square with a fountain and restaurants.

Toulon is located between the forest and the azure sea. You can look at the city from above from Mount Faron, 584 meters high. The site can be reached from the center by bus number 40 or funicular, which is located one and a half kilometers from the railway station. A ticket for the funicular in both directions will cost 12 € (864 R).

In the city center, the beaches are small and crowded. For the sea and sand, it is worth going to Murion - an area in the east of the city. There beautiful beaches and many fish restaurants.

Back in Toulon, I was impressed by the Royal Tower - a round fort built in the 16th century. Going up there, it seems that I got to the Fort Boyard game and Passepartout is walking somewhere nearby. From the walls of the tower overlooking the sea and the bay.

🏖️ Beaches

In every city and village there are many different beaches: rocky, pebbly, sandy, paid and free. Everywhere is clean azure water and incredible views of the Mediterranean.

Spending a day on a private beach in the center of Nice costs 20 € (1440 R). AT tourist cities you can rent a sun lounger for 6 € (432 R). The distance between them is twenty centimeters, and there are hundreds of people on the beach. It’s hard for me to imagine that in such an environment you can have a good rest, so I always went only to free beaches. They almost always have showers and changing cabins.

Karras beach 5 km long, located near the center of Nice. In the free part of the beach you can sunbathe on your towel. There is also a volleyball field there. There are a lot of people, but I still felt comfortable there to rest.

The entire coast is pebbly - it is better to swim in special swimming slippers. The sea is immediately deep, the water is clean and refreshing.

Beach along the Croisette in Cannes, almost all paid. But there are places at the beginning and end of the embankment for those who just want to lie on their towel.

The beach is sandy and the water is cold. I liked this beach more in the evening at sunset, when the sun falls below the horizon and illuminates the coast with orange light.

The beach of Juan-les-Pins cozy and quiet, although it is located 20 minutes from Cannes. The only reminders of the proximity of one of the most expensive cities in the world are the yachts seen on the horizon.

The town is small and nothing special but sandy and clean beach, is not in it. On weekdays it is comfortable and not crowded, but in the evening it is noisy on the beach: young people arrange parties on the coast.

On the beach of Pampelonne south of Saint-Tropez soft fine sand and warm clear sea. But you won’t be able to retire there: people go to Pampelonne for parties and meetings. Some places are chosen by nudists, and cafes and restaurants there are expensive. I don't like bars and noisy places, so the beach was interesting to me only during the day.

Billionaires Bay Beach small and picturesque, surrounded by rocks and trees. The water is clear and refreshing, and the shore and bottom are rocky. It is better to come to the beach in the morning in order to have time to enjoy the tranquility.

On the island of Sainte-Marguerite held a man in an iron mask. On the local beaches you can go for the whole day: walk along the cedar alleys and visit the beaches in different parts islands. The coastline is rocky, in some places the water washed into the rocks beautiful caves. Even from the island you can look at yachts: there are more of them in the sea than seagulls in the sky.

There is a ferry from Cannes to the island, the journey takes 15-20 minutes. A ticket costs 14 € (1008 R) in both directions. It can be purchased in advance on the carrier's website.

💸 Money

The currency of France is the euro. You can pay by card in restaurants and shops. If you want to leave a tip, tell the waiter the amount and he will write it on the bill. To buy coffee at a beach cafe or a souvenir, it is better to have cash with you.

🚌 Transport

Trains. Trains and electric trains run along the Cote d'Azur. There are train stations in Nice, Cannes, Toulon and Antibes. The best prices are for the TER regional train. On it from Nice to Toulon - an hour and a half on the way, a ticket costs an average of 15 € (1080 R). From Nice to Menton, a city on the border with Italy, - only 40 minutes. The fare will cost an average of 5 € (360 R).

Tickets are sold at the box office of the station, vending machines or on the official website of the French Railways. Cheaper train tickets can be bought on the Vigo website. For example, a ticket from Nice to Toulon is on average 30% cheaper and costs 10 € (720 R). Payment is accepted only from bank cards European Union. European friends helped me buy a ticket.

Bus. Small distances between cities are best covered by buses. For example, from Nice to Cannes you can take bus number 200 for 1.5 € (108 R). He stops at different cities, including in Juan-les-Pins and Antibes. Tickets are sold by the driver. Travel time is an hour and a half, if there are no traffic jams.

In cities, I always walk, but you can also get around by city bus. Usually a ticket costs 1.5-2 € (110-146 R).

In summer, booking a car is expensive: an economy class car will cost 90-100 € (6480-7200 R) per day. If you book in advance, you can find a car for 20-30 € (1440 -2160 R). Picking up a car at city offices is usually 20-30% cheaper than at the airport.

🏨 Housing

I usually look for hotels or apartments on Booking, Agoda and Airbnb. On the Cote d'Azur, the most options are on Air-bn-b. Prices are lower if booked in advance. A few days before arrival good options may not be.

The cost of apartments and hotels in Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez is more expensive than in less popular cities. For example, in Nice, a small hotel room is not coastline costs at least 70 € (5040 R) per day, in Saint-Tropez - 120 € (8640 R). In Juan-les-Pins, apartments near the beach will cost 45 € (3240 R), a hotel in the center of Toulon - 58 € (4176 R).

🐟 Food

Cafes and restaurants. The busier the street, the more expensive the food. In Cannes, on the central streets of the old town, pasta costs 20 € (1440 R), a glass of wine - from 5 € (360 R). In less touristy cities like Antibes, prices are 5-10% lower.

To save money, you can order takeaway food. I like to buy hot pizza only from the oven, drinks in the supermarket and eat in the park. Such a lunch costs a maximum of 13 € (936 R).

Many restaurants in France offer set menus. They cost from 15 € (1080 R). For this money you can eat an appetizer, main course and dessert.

The shops. Fresh, already cut meat for a steak costs 4 € (288 R), three frozen pizzas - 3 € (216 R), fresh sushi - 6 € (432 R). On average, for a trip to the store with the purchase of wine, I spent 20-30 € ( 1440 -2160 R). There was enough food for two days. Shops are standard: Carrefour, Casino, Lidl.

national products. The traditional pancake socca is made from chickpea flour in the oven and costs 3 € (216 R). I didn’t really like it and seemed tasteless, but for the sake of experiment you can try. It should only be eaten hot.

Rosé wine is considered traditional in Provence. It is drunk as an aperitif or between meals. In a supermarket, a bottle of wine costs 3-4 € (216 -288 R) and more.

In almost any restaurant on the Cote d'Azur, you can order a salad with Nicoise tuna. In hot weather, you don't want anything else. "Nicoise" usually costs 15 € (1080 - 360 R ), chocolate for 1-3 € (72 -216 R).

Lavender is a symbol of French Provence, which includes the Cote d'Azur. There are many shops in the cities that sell everything from lavender. Once I bought lavender tea and since then I can’t imagine how I can leave Provence without it. A pack of tea bags costs about 6 € (432 R).

Cicadas are like large flies that chirp loudly. You can hear them especially in the parks in the evening. They are also a symbol Azure coast, so for friends who collect magnets, you can bring one in the form of a cicada. The magnet will cost 3-5 € (216

The Côte d'Azur, also known as the French Riviera, is located on the southeast coast of mediterranean sea, east of Marseille and includes many famous places, such as: Cannes, the traditional venue for film festivals, Monte Carlo with an abundance of casinos and the independent Principality of Monaco, not to mention Nice and Saint-Tropez, where Russians have loved to relax since pre-revolutionary times. Many argue about the specific western extremities of this area, but a map of the Côte d'Azur can give a general idea. Sometimes such resorts as Hyeres, Cassis or Toulon are mentioned, in addition to Marseille, but, undoubtedly, the French Riviera ends at the foot of the Alpes-Maritimes, already on the border with Italy.

Having gone to this part of France, it is difficult to imagine a trip without a trip along three winding mountain roads between Monaco and Nice, which are called corniches here, which translates as cornices. Stop to wander through the rock gardens at the medieval stone village of Eze, perched on a 427-metre-high peak. Of particular note is Jardin Èze, exotic garden with a huge collection of cacti.

When it comes to Nice, it is difficult to name only a couple of attractions and characteristic features this place. Definitely worth tasting authentic Niçoise cuisine in this atmospheric city with a long history. Also noteworthy is Cours Saleya, located parallel to the sea in the southern part of the Old Town of Nice, where one of the most vibrant and colorful local street markets in the south of France is located.

The Promenade des Anglais, built by English emigrants in 1822, is a wide promenade lined with palm trees. This is beautiful place for walking along the beaches. In addition, there are a number of outstanding buildings, among which the Hotel Negresco, built in 1912, can be distinguished, the second attraction of this promenade is the Palais de la Mediterane, made in the Art Deco style.

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas is also located here, the largest cathedral of this diocese outside of Russia, with six bright, mosaic-like baths and an expressive facade in red and blue tones.

- is the second largest city in France by the number of inhabitants and at the same time largest port this country.

Given the right amount of time, art lovers should visit the village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, where many artists have been on sketches, from Matisse to Picasso. The hallmark of this medieval village built on the hills is its phenomenal artistic heritage. She has always attracted many iconic artists in the twentieth century. Such as, for example, the Russian artist Marc Chagall, who is buried here. Confirming your cultural significance, Saint-Paul-de-Vence has over seven hundred and forty galleries to explore. And this is only a small part of everything that can be experienced on the Cote d'Azur.
