  • Review of Helsinki Helsinki - very small cozy city, a total of a million people, zero traffic jams. The cafe has reasonable prices. A sea of shops and hotels. To see the city in a day, we took a ticket for an hour bus tour from the port where our ferry approached. They give headphones, a story in ten languages, including Russian. Everything was shown and told in an hour, of course, at a gallop. But then we knew for sure that we would like to see in more detail - we visited the church in the rock (I didn’t understand the name) and walked around the central ... March 6, 2018

After the signing of the Moscow Truce on September 19, 1944, which ended the Soviet-Finnish war, the border between the countries was changed. In the same year, on the Vyborg-Helsinki road near the village of Yulya-Urpola, it was decided to equip a customs point. It was also named "Yulia-Urpola" and assigned to the Vyborg customs, established four years earlier. In January 1949, the Yulia-Urpola customs post was renamed by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR into customs post Torfyanovka. The staff of the post consisted of 1 official. In winter, due to the lack of traffic across the border customs post Torfyanovka closed.

How to get to the Torfyanovka checkpoint and features of the border crossing

Moving from St. Petersburg towards Vyborg along the highway "Scandinavia" (E18 / M10) we reach the junction of the Vyborg ring road. And here you have two options for a possible advance to the border. You can either drive through Vyborg or along the ring road of the city.

If you don’t need to stop by the city, for example, to admire the Vyborg castles or visit the local Karusel hypermarket, then you can safely go along the district. It will most likely be faster and easier. We go nowhere without turning off according to the signs for Helsinki.

If you still decide to pass through the city, then we continue our journey following the sign "Vyborg". Having passed the traffic police post at the entrance to the city, you continue to drive along the main road. As a landmark, you will see a crossroads, to the right of which, on a steep slope, is a beautiful church with large letters "Christ is Risen". At this intersection, you need to go straight to the left; After about half a kilometer you will be at the railway station on your right. From it we move along the main road to the right, we pass by the Vyborg Castle, then we cross high bridge across the bay and find ourselves at a fork with a pointer to Helsinki and Lappeenranta.

There used to be the first passport cordon, now it has been removed. From this fork, you can change direction and go right. Then you will get to and in Lappeenranta. We turn to Helsinki and drive without turning anywhere until we hit the barrier passport control. The border guard will check your passports for a valid visa and let you through. Following further along the Scandinavia highway, you will eventually come to a green booth with another barrier. Here they will check your passports again and let you through. Immediately after this checkpoint, you can refuel at the last one before the border Lukoil gas station and apply for a green card.

Drive a little more and Checkpoint Torfyanovka in front of you is a barrier, checking passports and entering the customs territory. Difficulties when crossing the border should not arise. Due to the large flow of tourists, people here are used to working quickly.

After passing the Russian post, you can stop by the Duty Free store. Do not forget about the prohibitions and restrictions on the import of certain goods into Finland.

Before the Finnish border, the police can stop you and ask the driver to "blow into the tube", that is, to take an alcohol test. Be ready! If the norm of alcohol content in the blood (0.5 ppm) is exceeded, they, of course, will not take away your license, but will turn it back. For the rest, follow the traffic lights and follow the simple ones.
