Archaeological excavations show that these sources have been known to people for more than one century. The tribes living here built special pools or simply dug holes in which the "magic" water was supposed to collect.

How and when did they appear in these places healing springs, nobody knows. The locals tell beautiful legend about a prince who lived in these places many years ago. He had a daughter, whose hands and hearts were sought by many neighboring rulers. But the proud beauty did not reciprocate anyone. One of the failed suitors decided to take revenge on the princess and persuaded some sorcerer to help him. Once the princess was swimming in the pond and saw a beautiful swan swimming nearby. Having swum up to the bird, the girl touched him, after which her skin became covered with ulcers, from which no healer could save the princess. God heard the prayers of the old prince-father and imprisoned the sorcerer in the dungeon, forcing him to boil water there on a sulfur fire. Wonderful water from the ground was supposed to come to the surface. The princess received healing from this water. And the sorcerer is still serving his sentence underground.

For the first time, Russians became aware of the healing properties of the springs in 1829. Lieutenant Novitsky, on duty, was in the Psekups valley. Here he discovered the "magic" water, which has been used since time immemorial. locals. In 1864, a primitively equipped hospital and a military hospital were built near the springs. The hospital had a swimming pool with a common pool. In the summer of 1864, the first batch of patients, suffering mainly from colds and skin diseases, began a course of treatment. In the mid-80s of the last century, a bathroom building was built, in which there were 15 separate cabins and a cooling pool for hydrogen sulfide water. A special trench for diverting waste water from the resort into the general sewer appeared not so long ago.

It should be noted that until the middle of the 19th century, the Adyghe settlement Psyfab, which in Adyghe means “hot water”, was located on the site of Goryachiy Klyuch. When the Russian authorities decided to build a hospital, the indigenous population was immediately evicted to the Ottoman Empire. In 1868, the town of Goryachiy Klyuch appeared (from 1906 to 1920 the full name of the town sounded like Alekseevsky Goryachiy Klyuch). It was small locality, which consisted of sources, a hospital, a clinic and buildings in which the attendants lived.

Before the October Revolution, the main visitors to the hospital were wealthy people. The Bolsheviks made the resort accessible to the working masses. In 1919 he signed a decree on the nationalization of resorts. A year later, Goryachiy Klyuch becomes a Soviet health resort. Here the construction of the sanatorium began. In 1924, under the leadership of the Kuban-Black Sea Revolutionary Committee, restoration work began at the resort. The population of the town gradually grew due to the arrival of geologists and builders. In 1926, the town received the status of a village, and in 1930 - a resort village. Until 1963, Goryachiy Klyuch was considered the administrative center of the Goryacheklyuchevsky district.

Goryachiy Klyuch was significantly damaged during the Great Patriotic War. The resort was almost completely destroyed by the Nazi invaders. A significant part of the springs has also been destroyed and polluted. The occupation lasted for about six months. Immediately after the Nazis were expelled, the locals began to restore the resort. From the beginning of August 1943, the resort was already able to receive patients. The main patients of the hospital then were the wounded soldiers of the Soviet Army.

After the end of the war, geological and hydrological work was carried out on the territory of the resort, which turned out to be very effective. New sources were discovered, and the total water flow per day exceeded 400,000 liters (when the hospital first opened, this figure was 2 times less).

The history of Goryachiy Klyuch as a city began on November 11, 1965. The village of Klyuchevaya was also attached to the city. In 1975, Goryachiy Klyuch was classified as a city of regional subordination (it became the administrative center of the region).
