The unique Bloody Falls is in 10th place among the most mystical places in the world.

The abandoned building has become an attractive place for those who decide to commit suicide. It must be said that the appearance and the surrounding area do their bit - the hotel is made in the Gothic style and is located near the waterfall in a secluded place, which gives it a rather gloomy look. Despite its reputation, the abandoned hotel attracts many tourists.

6.

On the 6th place among the most mystical places in the world is Indian Roopkund lake located at an altitude of 5029 meters in the Himalayas. Every year, when the snow melts, hundreds of skulls and skeletons can be seen on its banks. Therefore, the second name of the alpine reservoir is "Lake of Skeletons". Back at the end XIX century there were rumors that numerous human remains lay on its shore and bottom. It is said that they were first noticed by pilgrims who once every 12 years visit a sacred place called Homkund. Their path lies along the shore of Lake Roopkund. To hard to reach place explorers were able to get there only in 1942. Rumors about skeletons were confirmed. After that, expeditions of paleontologists, anthropologists and geologists reached the lake. Hundreds (probably up to 600) skeletons were found on the shores and at the bottom of the lake. Their approximate age is from 500 to 800 years. After genetic analysis of the remains, it turned out that most of them belong to men.

Many hypotheses have been put forward for the reasons for the death of people near Lake Roopkund: an avalanche, an epidemic, mass suicide. Subsequently, when analyzing the bones, it turned out that the damage to them was caused by huge hailstones (up to 7 centimeters in diameter). A group of people walking along the coast of Roopkund hundreds of years ago died due to a strong hail - this is one of the most likely versions of the appearance of hundreds of skeletons in this place.

House of Winchesters

This spooky and complex architectural structure is located in San Jose, California (USA). Among the locals, he deservedly enjoys a bad reputation, they try to bypass him. What can not be said about the thousands of tourists who are simply eager to get acquainted with its terrible history and who want to tickle their nerves. The Winchester house was built over 30 years and each time, at the whim of the future owner, it underwent some changes. On this venture, Sarah Winchester spent almost all the huge fortune that her father-in-law had amassed - the creator of the famous brand of weapons. After all, it is well known that his brainchild, the Winchester rifle, conquered the West and played a decisive role in the outcome civil war in the USA. Then Oliver, thanks to lucrative contracts with the government, became one of the richest people in America. However, fabulous money does not always bring happiness and peace in the family. First, the father-in-law dies, then the daughter of Sarah Annie, who lived in this world for several months. And five years later, the husband of a young woman, William, also passes away. Shocked by the loss of loved ones, Sarah Winchester, who has almost lost her mind, turns to a medium for help. And the fortune-teller, without further ado, tells her that the famous and ill-fated rifle is to blame for all the troubles, through the fault of which many people died. For this reason, the Winchester family is cursed. And on the advice of the medium, Sarah goes west, to San Jose, on the trail, as the fortuneteller assured, the ghost of her husband. It is here that she will soon build the famous multi-story "trap" for evil spirits that haunt her family and do not leave Sarah alone on moonlit nights. The project of the house, the woman made all its details herself, drawing future sketches on napkins. For some reason, Sarah Winchester did not favor architects ...

I must say that in the rebuilt Winchester house everything is unusual and strange. For example, there was a specialized room where Sarah consulted with the spirits and where no one dared to enter. The house had 40 stairs that did not lead anywhere, but only rested on the ceiling. In one of the rooms, the window was in the floor (by the way, this innovation will be adopted by designers). Almost all bathrooms had glass doors. And everywhere, meaning the number of buildings, the figure "13" appeared. There were exactly so many windows in the rooms, steps on the stairs. Therefore, the Winchester house resembled a kind of intricate, mystical labyrinth. And tourists were forbidden to walk around its rooms without a guide: there was a danger of getting injured or getting lost.

About the madness of Sarah Winchester, about the bizarre character of a woman, they did not stop talking even after her death. But how then to explain the very sensible and noble deeds of Sarah? She, for example, donated $ 2 million to build a hospital in Connecticut. She also grew plums and apricots on forty hectares of land and sent them dried to European markets. Add here her outstanding talent as an architect who created such a house.

The Winchester House, its sinister appearance and unsolved mysteries could not but attract the attention of creative people. The temptation was too great to capture their impressions in a novel or in a film. Therefore, it is not surprising that Stephen King wrote the script for the mini-series "The Scarlet Rose Mansion" and the film "The Haunting of Winchester House" was made.

Island of the Dolls in Mexico

The Island of the Dolls lies between the famous canals of Xochimiko, not far from Mexico City. This enchanted place not only terrifies the native Mexicans, but also terrifies tourists who come here from all over the world because of curiosity and for the thrill. Despite the cute name of the island, it is by no means conducive to hospitality. Literally at every step you are met by crumpled dolls hanging on every tree, on any building. It is as if you have personally fallen into the atmosphere of the famous horror film "Children's Games" and no longer have any idea how to get out of this damn place. Baby dolls with empty eye sockets, crushed heads, torn off legs or arms make up a terrible “decoration” of the island. One gets the feeling that this is exactly what our world will look like after the apocalypse. The author of this creation, the creator of the Island of the Dolls, has long since passed away in Bose. But until now, ordinary Mexicans, at the mention of the name of Julian Santana Barrera, noticeably turn pale and read prayers. This hermit fanatically collected broken dolls for fifty years to build a creepy gallery on the island. Once Barrera had a family, a decent job and did not stand out among others. Everything was decided by a tragic event: once, before his eyes, a little girl drowned in a canal. And after this event, the ghost of a dead child began to haunt him. To appease the spirit of the girl, Julian, having put an end to his former life, retired from this world with one goal: to create the Island of the Dolls. And I must say - he did it. But Barrera didn't stop there. As if an evil spirit was leading Barrera behind him, he thought of only one thing: how to increase the already huge collection of broken and ugly dolls. Julian lived in a hut, ate fish caught in the canal, grew vegetables and fruits. Sometimes a nephew would come and pick up the harvest, so that later he could exchange it in the city for dolls.

The life of the hermit - "improviser" ended tragically: by a strange coincidence, he drowned in the same canal where the little girl died. Apparently, Barrera did not manage to get along with her spirit ...

And Julian's nephew became the owner of the Island of the Dolls and earns a lot of money from his uncle's terrible collection. This place still scares everyone, and it is curious that no director has yet tried to shoot a picture against its background ...

Paris catacombs

This unique structure consists of a network underground tunnels and artificial type caves located under the French capital. Since the end of the 18th century, the remains of almost six million people have been buried in the Parisian catacombs. They say that their length is more than 200 kilometers. And they, according to local residents, are allegedly teeming with the ghosts of the dead. And it all started with quarries. When, by the end of the 10th century, the stone reserves came to an end, it was decided to start underground mining. First artificial caves adapted for their needs enterprising monks: they rebuilt wine cellars. With the light hand of the ministers of the church, the tunnels began to be laid further, almost "under the feet" of Paris.

In the Middle Ages, in order to avoid the spread of the black plague, the dead were buried en masse in the dungeons of the capital. Later, for a reason unknown to us, but understandable to the French, famous people began to be buried here. The last refuge in the catacombs, for example, was found by the famous revolutionaries Robespierre and Danton, the scientist Pascal and the storyteller Perrault.

The Parisian catacombs have always been shrouded in dark secrets, sinister, blood-curdling stories. But this circumstance does not stop tourists who line up in long lines to wander through two underground passages (no more than two kilometers) and “feel” the smell of past eras. By the way, it is considered bad manners if you refuse, say, to visit the ossuary - a place of mass graves. Therefore, plucking up courage, tourists reluctantly come here to look at the underground "world" of the dead with at least a slightly closed eye... It's funny that during the Second World War, the top-secret bunker of the German army and the headquarters of the leaders of the Resistance movement were located literally side by side in the catacombs . They were separated by only 500 meters of crossing ...

The theme of the Parisian catacombs turned out to be a tasty morsel for many masters of culture and art. Victor Hugo, for example, wrote his novel Les Misérables, and the American director Tomm Cocker directed the horror film Catacombs.

Dracula's castle in Romania

This castle is located in the picturesque town of Bran in Transylvania. Once in the Middle Ages, it served as a fortress for local merchants and a customs post. The castle of Count Dracula - a ruthless killer and a vampire, the image of which arose from the complete mixing of real historical facts and fiction, is a network of halls, corridors, numerous underground passages. You can easily get lost in it, and at the same time enter here unnoticed, thanks to its intricate and complex device. And in the courtyard of the castle there is a well, with which terrible and terrible events are associated. A secret passage was arranged here, through which Vlad the Impaler, the ruler of Wallachia, was brought for the comfort of peasant girls frightened to death, as well as enemies for torture and execution. The count was extremely cruel and even liked to kill people for fun, he believed that taking baths from the blood of killed enemies was a worthy and “sweet” occupation for a real nobleman. The fear of Vlad the Impaler was so great that thieves and criminals simply fled from these places. As a sign that they would never return, a golden bowl was placed in the central square of the city near the well. Every inhabitant used it for drinking, and no one ever thought of stealing the treasure.

The ruthless ruler was killed in one of the wars. But even after his death, he left his loyal subjects alone. According to legend, because of the atrocities committed earlier, Vlad Tepes turned into a vampire. It is said that after the funeral, the body of the monster disappeared from the grave, and his ghost still walks in the castle. Thanks to Bram Stoker, he acquired a literary name - Count Dracula. And according to his novel, director Francis Coppola made a famous film that tells spectacularly about the life of a vampire.

They do not even allow tourists to visit it, considering the mountain a sacred place. They believe that the devil himself created the tower and any approach to the Devil's Tower threatens with dire consequences. And indeed, the device of the mountain does not at all speak of a natural origin. Ufologists, for example, argue that the Devil's Tower is a landing site for alien ships. But the local Indians have a different opinion. According to a legend passing from one generation to another, seven girls were walking in the forest, and they were suddenly attacked by the devil, who took the form of a bear. In fear, the children climbed onto a small stone and began to pray to their main deity. Their calls were heard: the stone turned into a gigantic mountain, which the devil could no longer climb.

The most incredible, sometimes dramatic events are connected with the Devil's Tower. One day skydiver George Hopkins apparently decided to enter the Guinness Book of Records and become famous all over the world. He decided to conquer the mountain from the air. Despite the storm wind, he managed to land on small playground. The skydiver's joy knew no end: he was already dreaming of the popularity of the first conqueror of Devil's Mountain. However, for some unknown and mysterious reasons, he became a hostage of this truly enchanted place. For a week they could not remove him from the mountain. And at the end of his stay, he found, to his horror, that he was among a huge number of rats. The unfortunate skydiver braced himself for the worst. But the climbers still managed to rescue him from captivity: George Hopkins, frightened to death, could not even utter a word ...

By the way, Devil's Mountain appears in Steven Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It is noteworthy that in one of the episodes of the picture the protagonist builds a copy of it.

House of Horror in Amityville

A house in which ghosts live and which does not tolerate living people in its chambers. And it exists in nature: its location is in the suburbs of New York, in Amityville. Here, in June 1965, six people were killed - almost the entire family of the owner of the house, De Feo. Only the youngest, Ronald, survived. It was he who confessed to the cold-blooded murder of his relatives. During the trial, many were struck by the strange details of the criminal event. For example, none of the neighbors heard the rumble of a shotgun, all the victims lay face down, while the accused himself did not stop claiming that a certain Indian leader forced him to kill his family.

LaLaurie's mansion in the so-called French Quarter Vieux Carre, at 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA was built at the end of the 18th century, and at the beginning of the 19th century the family of Dr. LaLaurie settled here. The couple immediately won the favor of the local nobility. The doctor became a respected physician in the state of Louisiana, and his charming young wife, Mary, arranged wonderful evenings for old friends and new acquaintances, at which they talked about art and culture, played classical music. Everything was decent and orderly, the reputation of the LaLaurie family was so high in society that no one even dared to cast a shadow on her. Thunder struck from a clear sky. Madame Lalaurie turned out to be a real Russian Saltychikha. And her impeccable behavior in public was just a mask behind which a cruel and despotic woman was hiding. One day, in a fit of anger, she chased after a young maid, the latter could not resist on the balcony and fell from the third floor, breaking to death. This incident alarmed the entire public: a trial was held at which Madame LaLaurie was given a rather large fine of three hundred dollars and was forbidden to use the services of slaves. It would seem that the story is over and justice has triumphed. But it received an unexpected tragic continuation. One day, a fire broke out in LaLaurie's house during their absence. Arriving firefighters, extinguishing the raging fire, discovered a secret room where there were ten people: five of them were in cages, three were chained in the wall, and two lay tied up on the floor. When the LaLaurie couple returned home, they were almost torn to pieces by a crowd of angry people. Soon they urgently left the mansion and disappeared somewhere in Europe. And at the end of the 19th century, the builders of the house found under the floor the remains of twelve slaves stretched on the instruments of torture. According to local residents, they often see the ghost of a black man in chains in the mansion. Do not forget about his home and the spirit of Madame Lalaurie. Some townspeople claim that they even heard her screams ...

The image of Madame Delphine LaLaurie was used in the third season of the horror anthology American Horror Story, played by actress Kathy Bates.

Lizzy Borden's house

Christina Ricci as Lizzie Borden

Photo frame from the film "Lizzy Borden took an ax"

This house is located in the small town of Fall River, Massachusetts (USA). It was here that the most mysterious murder of the 19th century took place, when, it would seem, all the evidence directly spoke of the guilt of one person - Lizzie Borden. Her fate is somewhat reminiscent of the story of Cinderella, however, with some peculiarities. Father - Mr. Borden - was rich and stingy, the funeral home, which he owned, brought considerable income. Stepmother Abby Darfi Gray was a real evil stepmother, but not from a fairy tale, but from real life. In fact, Lizzie did not have a happy childhood. In addition, a terrible incident almost ruined a vulnerable and tender soul: the father, enraged by the behavior of pigeons - his daughter's favorites, beheaded them with an ax ...

It all happened on August 4, 1892. Elder sister Emmy went to friends, Lizzie, maid Bridget Sullivan and stepmother remained in the house. While Mrs. Borden was washing the stairs, someone unknown crept up and hit her with an axe. And then he did it nineteen more times. Eleven hours later, the father of the family who returned home met the same fate. The high-profile murder shocked the entire district. The police took Lizzie Borden into custody, while the girl was surprisingly calm.

The case of Lizzie Borden caused a huge resonance in respectable America. Everything indicated that the girl was to blame, she was facing, if not the death penalty, then life imprisonment was guaranteed. But events unfolded in such a way that the court was powerless in the face of the eloquence of lawyer George Robinson, the former governor of Massachusetts. It was he who at one time was engaged in the appointment of judges. Lizzy Borden was acquitted, she, along with her sister, received a decent parental fortune. It is known that she never married, had no children.

This beautiful, quiet and fabulous place, like a magnet, attracts people who do not know that soon each of them will be haunted by mystical horror. The Valley of the Headless stretches across northwestern Canada along the South Nahan River. At the end of the 19th century, hunters rushed here for gold, which was lying literally under their feet. The thirst for profit, quick enrichment took possession of the minds of people so much that they forgot about the warning of the local residents - the Indians. And soon there was a panic among the gold diggers. Anyone who entered the canyon lost his head - in the truest sense of the word. As the number of headless dead comrades began to rise, many fled the cursed valley in fear.

Since then, this place has been infamous and whoever stepped on its land became a victim of unknown and sophisticated killers. According to one of the versions, to which the Indians were inclined, it was a "snowman", whose peace was disturbed by people. Others argued about an unknown tribe guarding their wealth and allowing mere mortals to reach it.

In 1978, a group of six researchers led by Dr. Hank Mortimer, with the latest equipment, went to the valley of the headless and disappeared. The last message read: “Void emerges from the rock. It's horrible!" The search was unsuccessful, only the headless body of one of the members of the expedition was found.

Today, there are few volunteers who have ventured into the valley of the headless. Some scientists explain this phenomenon by the existence of parallel worlds, the intervention of unknown dark forces, the nature of which they are not yet able to unravel. The eerie valley, by the way, has not yet become a place of pilgrimage for movie masters. Apparently, not without reason, everyone fears for their own head ...

Mountain of the Dead, Sverdlovsk Region

Photo frame from the film "The Secret of the Dyatlov Pass"

The Mansi people living in these remote lands call her Kholat-Syahyl. Terrible events took place here already in the 30s of the last century. At first, a murdered woman with gouged out eyes and a torn out tongue was found on the outskirts of the mountain, and later they found the bodies of ten fugitive criminals, terribly mutilated, with grimaces of horror on their surviving faces. Of course, no investigation was carried out, the investigators unanimously claimed that they had so crippled each other in a deadly fight.

The mystical and dark origin of the Mountain of the Dead was noticed only in 1959, when a group of experienced tourists led by Igor Dyatlov went on a hike in the Subpolar Urals. When they reached Mount Kholat-Syahyl, they made a halt. And at night something inexplicable happened: all the tourists died under rather mysterious circumstances. They were searched for more than two weeks. When the Dyatlov group was discovered, a terrible picture appeared before the eyes of those who found the corpses. It seemed that people were running in panic, in horror from something unknown. Some tourists had broken ribs and punched heads.

Until now, no one can explain the reason for the death of Igor Dyatlov's group. It seems that this is unlikely to happen in the near future. Some of the researchers are looking for the causes of the tragedy in hostile aliens, others believe that local shamans are involved in the case. However, a lot of documentaries were shot on this topic, interpreting the death of tourists in their own way. And in 2013, the fantastic thriller by Renny Harlin "The Mystery of the Dyatlov Pass" was released, very freely, in the spirit of American traditions, interpreting this tragic story.
