The airports of the Canary Islands have international names. Canary Islands - Tenerife South Airport

Families with children of different ages can go here, as well as lovers of a spree. Everyone will find what he is looking for. The choice of resorts here is quite large - from Puerto de la Cruz to Las Americas. Calm lagoons, beaches with soft, white sand - this is in abundance here.

There are two large ones on the island, which receive tourists from all over the world. The names of the airports in Tenerife are North and South. They got them because they are in different parts islands. They have their own history and features, which makes them special among other airport complexes.

South Airport

South Airport on the map of Tenerife is an air terminal complex in the south of the island. It was opened in 1978 under Queen Sofia of Spain. The airport was named after her for the first time - Reine Sofia. Over time, it began to be called simply Yuzhny, and the former name is no longer used.

Airports on the map of Tenerife.

At the end of the 60s the island authorities came to the conclusion that it was necessary to build new airport. Los Rodeos - old - could no longer cope with its functions, as bad weather conditions there prevented this.

In 1977 the terminal building and the control tower were already ready.

All the main ones land here, as well as regular flights, from all over the world.

There is one airport terminal on the territory of the complex, which consists from three floors. It is large and comfortable. Tourist offices and ATMs, restaurants and bars - here you will find everything. Of the airports in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, the South is the main and paramount.

South Airport.

From the capital of the island - Santa Cruz de Tenerife - it is located 60 km. Closer to it is the resort of Playa de Las Americas - he is 20 km. The most convenient way to get to them from the airport is by taxi. The trip will cost you at 30-35 euros.

For 3-4 euros you can take the buses that depart from there to the Northern airport or the capital. Travel time will be 40 minutes.

North airport

If we talk about how many airports there are in Tenerife, then the North one is the second most important in terms of passenger traffic. Most close city to him - Santa Cruz. It is a hub for flights to Europe or South America.

Its other name is Los Rodeos. This is the oldest airfield on the island. It is infamous for being the site of the largest in the world. In 1977, in March, two Boeings collided in the fog on the runway. 583 people died then.

In 1972 there was another big disaster, which was considered the largest in Spain, until another happened - in the 77th year.

Other major disaster happened in 1980. Then, due to pilot error, 727 crashed, taking lives with it. 146 people.

Northern airport.

In 2003 opened new terminal. This is a large building with 4 floors. There was also parking nearby. By 2006 passenger turnover exceeded 4 million.

Its runway reaches 3 170 m.

The northern airport on the map of Tenerife is indicated as Tenerife Norte. It accepts flights between the islands, to Spain and from America.

It is smaller in size than the Southern one, but it is also well equipped. Its location is what does not add to its popularity. Bad weather conditions add problems to pilots when landing or taking off.

Another reason why it is not very comfortable is that he doesn't work at night. Yes and during the day it is often closed.

In one terminal you will find everything you need, from ATMs to cafes. There is also free wireless internet.

Other resorts can be reached by taxi or bus. Ticket prices for the last from 2.45 to 9.70 euros. Taxi is better and more convenient, as it will get you to the hotel you need faster.

When planning a trip to the Canary Islands, I had to think hard about which island to go to. And all because four international airports are ready to accept Russian citizens at once:

  • Gran Canaria;
  • La Palma;
  • Los Rodeos;
  • Tenerife South.

There are at least two more - Hierro and Tenerife Norte - but these hubs serve exclusively flights between the islands. Since my path lay in Tenerife, let me tell you about the local air harbor of international importance. ;)

The airport itself is small, but quite modern and comfortable. I was pleased with the quick service and the absence of kilometer-long queues even at the peak of the season, but I was a little alarmed by how, almost without looking, stamps are put in the passports.

Inside there is a small cafe where you can have a hearty meal. Please note that the food court is open until 20:00; There is also duty-free (literally 3-4 boutiques), but the prices here are much higher than in the resort itself, so it is better to buy all kinds of souvenirs in advance.

The state of the toilets was very upsetting: it would not hurt to wash and repair them thoroughly. In general, even despite the large number of cleaners, the airport is dirty. I didn't find any lockers.

At the exit, at least two or three dozen taxi drivers will be waiting for you, so you can get to the resting place without any problems. ;) There is also a bus going to the center, but not everyone will like to feel like a herring in a barrel on vacation.

More about airports

Tenerife North Airport is also called Tenerife Norte. It is worth knowing the Tenerife airport code to easily recognize it - TFN. This is the island's second international airport. It is focused on serving inter-island flights and flights to the Spanish mainland. Also, guests from the United States of America often fly here. If we compare this air harbor with the South Airport, it will be much smaller in size. The thing is that initially it was not planned at all that there would be an airport in that place. Due to the fact that it is not located in the most favorable place, it does not work at night, and sometimes even during the day. That is why passengers rarely fly there. As a rule, tourists land at Yuzhny airport, as it is more spacious and comfortable.

It should be noted that despite its small size, Severny Airport has all the necessary facilities. There are cafes, restaurants, ATMs, shops, and VIP zones. There is also free Wi-Fi. Generally given airport has everything that is necessary for passengers. However, as we have already said, it does not work around the clock, which significantly affects the number of people arriving there.
