About the manufacturer

MSR was founded in 1969 by engineer Larry Penberthy. He was fond of mountaineering and, like any other climber, he eventually became disillusioned with the existing climbing equipment. That is not enough, and it is not so - in general, everything is as usual. Since Internet forums had not yet been invented to vent their own discontent, Larry's protest found expression in the creation of his own company, Mountain Safety Research.

The private initiative did not last long and the brainchild of Larry was soon swallowed up by a large trading network. And since 2001, the brand has passed to the companyCascade Designs Inc - she also owns Term-a-Rest, by the way.

The creator of MSR himself, until leaving it in the 70s, led the development of more comfortable equipment from new materials than those available on the market. The current MSR calls itself the continuer of tradition and refers to the development process as modern - the innovation of existing equipment and its greater optimization for the needs of travelers. Marketing is not marketing, but the company does not suffer from unnecessarily complex structures, combining simplicity, quality and manufacturability. The price tag, however, makes you wake up at night in horror after shopping.

In our country, the MSR brand is especially famous for gasoline burners, gas cooking systems and snowshoes.

Previously, I have already posted reviews on MSR products - and.

How the tent came to me and where I tested it

I bought the tent from the store. It was like a mortgage, but I managed.

Why her? I needed a tent for solo long hikes in different mountain-taiga regions, light and reliable. As usual, everyone vied with each other in advising Ali Baba Ali Express, talking about the wonderfulness and steepness of the Chinese tents, which cost mere pennies. Many even were their happy owners. However, the operating conditions I had with the owners of Pokemon were radically different. It turns out that hikes of high categories in the Chinese ultralight are not in trend. Why would it?

The first tests of the Hubba NX Solo took place in Moscow parks, where I periodically scourge for lack of housing.

Then a tent. In addition to eating khychans, it was planned to test the tent with an increased wind load and on snow. But, despite the promises of the guidebook, the weather was entirely favorable for climbing, and the test results were indistinct.

For the sake of such sorties, the NX Solo was purchased. During the 17 days of the campaign, I managed to cover 240 km through an area famous for unstable and generally dirty weather. And for the tent, the hike turned out to be a really tough test.

Frame and weight of the tent

If we talk about MSR tents, then it is worth starting with the frame. That's how it's done.

He is red and has hubs. It is worth dwelling on the latter in more detail.

Technically, the tent is equipped with a single aluminum arc with a diameter of 9.5 mm.

Closer to the ends, the arc branches out. The splitter is the same hub. There are already two arcs coming out of it, which stretch the bottom of the tent.

The hub looks like this:

Our undersized brothers because of the Cupid are now cloning such hubs en masse. From here, ears peek out about their unreliability. However, MSR is fine with them, if you don’t fencing on the arcs, don’t jump on them and rake half a meter of cloud cover from the tent in time.

When folded, it is really one arc. Even the upper short one is connected to the main central one through a plastic adapter.

One arc and a light cloth dictate low weight - the minimum is only 1120 grams. Lightweights will make me laugh - most of them, who have not yet switched to tents, use tents weighing less than a kilogram. Mostly bought from Ali Baba. MSR, however, also has one.

MSR Freelite. In the version with an aluminum arc - there are lighter carbon ones - it weighs at least 890 grams. It has significant differences from NX. The hub is only on one end and the bottom on the opposite side is not stretched by an arc. The FreeLite's tambour is smaller and worse suited for cooking and walking gear. And it also has a less durable cloth on the bottom, awning, net and inner lining ... MSR FreeLite and MSR NX are completely different tents.

I mean, it's not worth drawing a parallel between the Chinese non-name and MSR NX. If even such similar FreeLite and NX have such differences...

When it became necessary to choose a tent, it was MSR FreeLite that was initially considered. Its installation showed, in comparison with the NX, much lower wind resistance, and a smaller vestibule a significant inconvenience for long journeys. In the end, I bought the NX.

It would be better to wait for Access.

MSR NX pole ends are inserted into holes on aluminum plates sewn to the corners of the tent bottom. In the upper part for the middle arc, there are approximately the same.

Stretched liner is fully self-supporting

For comparison - a photo of the frame and the inside of the light MSR FreeLite

If the installed NX interior resembles a sports car, then the FreeLite creates an association with a racing motorcycle.

Let's go back to NX.

The frame is very flexible. My tent was wrapped twice from the wind with a screw - the arcs not only did not break, but did not even experience residual deformation. Bold five MSR for the quality of the carcass.

The upper short arc can be placed either below or above the central arc:

Accordingly, the awning falls lower or higher, allowing you to adjust the ventilation and, in theory, the temperature inside the tent.

In fact, this is an absolutely unnecessary function, and when hiking, you always put the arc lower in order to press the awning and increase the streamlining of the tent cockpit.

Ventilation and temperature inside

The bottom trough of the tent is low, there is a lot of mesh on the inner lining. Mesh triangles are inserted at the front and back to draw air through sleeping bag sleeping.

In any case, the awning does not reach the ground and generally stands far from it.

I measured the temperature difference inside and outside in the Caucasus, it ranges from 0.5 degrees in windy weather and up to 2.5 degrees in complete calm. When buying, it is better to immediately focus on the absence of a drop and bury dreams of a lighter sleeping bag under the counter of the same store.

On Khamar-Daban, where chius is characteristic - the movement of a mass of cold air at a height of up to 0.5-1 meters, it is cruelly cold in a tent at night. Chius passes through the tent like a sieve with holes in it. I was forced to cover myself with a rescue blanket over the sleeping bag in a third of the nights. Alas, such is the specificity of the region, for which the bourgeois shushlaika is not designed. Khius is specific to some regions of Siberia, in any case, I saw him only there. The wind penetrates the tent less.

If there is a complete calm, and the temperature difference is high, then in the morning the condensate from the inside of the tent will be plentiful in any case. In general, the ventilation of the tent is excellent.

The awning has a closing ventilation window located opposite the entrance. Very effective when cooking in the vestibule.

Bold minus for the inability to open the ventilation from the inside. Really uncomfortable. It is necessary to leave the tent outside, bypass the stretch marks and adjust the ventilation. Especially when the first part of the night you want to sleep with the open, and cover it in the morning. Therefore, alas, most of the time in a normal trip you do not use the window due to the inconvenience of the process.

Durability of the inner tent, ergonomics and living space.

After six months of operation, with two trips and a lot of PVD, I admit the insignificance of fears about the strength of the bottom. There were never any problems. Of course, I did not bet on sharp knots and stones, approaching the choice of a place wisely. In those cases when I had to cut down a platform in the dwarf twice, I put a backpack under the tent. I would do the same for any tent and I think this is normal.

But the nylon next to the zipper is bristling with a fringe. I understand that this is nylon ... but somehow you do not expect to see MSR with the same disease as Splav tents. True, there are no holes yet and I hope not to appear, but it looks a shame for my month on the doshirak after the purchase.

On ergonomics there is a remark. The tent has, albeit quite small, but still a vestibule on the opposite side of the entrance. Boots, gaiters fit perfectly there, you can put an empty or slightly filled backpack sideways, as well as finely chopped tent designer. In general, there is a space closed from precipitation and it is stupid not to use it.

Now about the living space.

Thanks to the vertical walls of the tent for a loner, a surprisingly spacious sarcophagus is obtained.

Even unlike the tents from Ali Baba, the linear dimensions of the internal space are designed for adult Caucasians. The Chinese ultralight usually offers narrow and short coffins for sitting burial. MSR is not like that:

My friend Strare (Evgeny Lepikhin) is not the smallest build and boasts a height of 188 cm. He is quite at ease in the tent.

With me, a bunch of shmurdyak and a camp of gypsies are additionally included in the tent.

So the NX has an excellent weight-to-space ratio for long hikes. Without problems, you can sit, cook, change clothes and even dry things. Really comfortable tent.

Awning and water resistance

The awning is not symmetrical.

For the convenience of its installation, the stretching loops of the bottom of the tent on each side have their own color. Accordingly, the awning loops are also marked - so that the user does not get confused when installing where the front and where the back are.

A small vestibule can be made larger, or smaller if the awning is pulled to the ground.

Large vestibule can be opened completely

Convenient for training camps or generally at the camp in good weather.

The manufacturer stated that the tent holds 1200 mm. As I understand it, this is the figure after a certain service life. In addition, water resistance is highly dependent on the geometry of the tent.

But, this is all marketing theory and bullshit. And on Khamar-Daban it rained every day. So - heavy rain keeps the tent. Downpour wall - no. It leaked little by little from the top of a small vestibule, from a short arc. Half of what leaked got into the inner tent, through the mesh. Naturally, only on a sleeping bag. I sat through heavy showers in the tent twice, both times it leaked.

In principle, tents with more serious declared characteristics also leaked in my case. But, a fact is a fact - in a heavy downpour, the tent leaks.

Ease of installation and shortcomings on it

It takes an average of 16 minutes to set up and fully stretch a tent, being ushatanny in the trash from fatigue in bad weather. My record for the hike was 13 minutes.

Since the inner tent is put up first, in bad weather the tent gets wet entirely. You can set up a tent in a strong wind only out of severe necessity or pure love for BDSM.

The installation itself is not stressful, but takes time. If you put in the forest without stretch marks, then yes - only Chinese Pokemon and tents with a frame on an awning are faster. If you install it so that it is not torn and carried away above the forest zone, you will have to try.

Stretching the bottom of the tent have the ability to adjust the length. Useless function, as the sling shamelessly creeps.

Similarly with braces - you can adjust them with a standard plastic clip, but they quickly loosen. You have to knit a knot under a stone or a peg. In this place, the Chinese non-name rules.

Guys, by the way, are not tied everywhere on the tent, you have to tie it yourself. Apparently, the struggle for marketing weight 🙂

I immediately tied long cord loops to the stretching loops of the bottom so that I could stretch the stones.

Colour

The color has a surprisingly high degree of camouflage. I think MSR is just selling off the rest of the military tender. Absolutely not intended for tourist mountains.

Close up, the tent looks good in good weather.

It is worth moving away a little, as it merges with the landscape even in ideal weather.

From a distance it is impossible to see even betting on a case of vodka

In the snow, you can get lost twenty meters even in good weather. In a bad time, it’s better not to go out even out of need - then you won’t return.

Even in light fog on any terrain ... everything is bad too

In general - buy our protective tents MSR! 🙂

Tambour and cooking in it

The tambour is quite good in size. If you do not bother cooking in it, then it fits all the equipment of a loner. I myself preferred to store a backpack with part of the equipment on the street, and in the vestibule I prepared and kept a minimum of things.

Cooked only on gas, both in the cooking system and on the usual gas burner. There is enough space, both in height and in area.

The only thing is that because of the highly located awning, the vestibule is blown through and cooking on a conventional burner becomes more expensive in terms of fuel.

Footprint

You can stick it anywhere and at any angle.

Under it, it is easy to cut down a platform in birch elfin.

And if there is a path, then you can put it right on it.

Overnight in the snow

Just snow and low temperatures are not terrible for the tent. It is placed just as well, besides, thanks to its size, it is easier to bury it, bury it or cover it with a windproof wall. We did not need snow construction, but we had to spend the night on the snow.

Apart from wind resistance and drafts due to the high awning, I don't see any design limitations to not allow myself the joy of walking in winter.

wind resistance

My friend V.V. Gutorov argues that the tourist must suffer. I suffered severely from the wind on Khamar-Daban.

The tent has no wind resistance if the wind is sideways. At least somehow worth it only if the wind blows along. Each of my overnight stays above the forest zone on Khamar-Daban was associated with a risk.

Sometimes I had to get up at night and turn my house into the wind. Twice twisted the tent from the wind load.

As practice has shown, the tent is not designed for strong winds. Even a small storm will roll it out regardless of the degree of fortification with stones and orientation relative to the wind.

MSR recently announced the ACCESS 1 four-season tent, with a minimum weight of 1370 grams. It has a slightly different frame scheme.

The problem of twisting under strong winds is solved here with a full-fledged second arc.

On a hike, I tried to strengthen the tent with a support

Even such an impromptu scheme gives a positive effect. ACCESS has it, of course, higher. For difficult solo hikes within the Russian Federation, ACCESS is in any case much more suitable than my NX, although its frame scheme will not allow you to sit out a tough storm.

During the trip, I roughly estimated ACCESS 1 in order to take her to the winter single five. The operation of NX clarified the utopian nature of the idea - even the second arc in ACCESS in the winter will not help me. This is not a tent for hard camping, or it will be limited to certain regions.

findings

Pros: lightweight; flexible and durable frame; excellent ventilation; excellent ratio of weight and dimensions of internal space for a long trip; small footprint; comfortable.

Cons: bottom fixation loops crawl; clamps for adjusting the length of the guy lines creep; inability to open the ventilation on the tent from the inside; too masking color; leaking in the downpour; low wind resistance.

In general, the tent is designed for either the majors or the pros. There is nothing more to say somehow ... In simpler hikes, you can get by with a simpler tent. On difficult long hikes, its convenience will be appreciated by an experienced loner who is able to level out shortcomings with experience.

frame material frame material

The frame is the skeleton of the tent. It is necessary that the material from which it is made is solid, light and does not deform under load. In the production of the frame, aluminum, fiberglass, steel, and durapol are used. There are also tents without a frame - they are placed on trekking poles or other improvised materials and tents with an inflatable frame.

Fiberglass- the most common material for arcs in the amateur segment. Fiberglass or fiberglass poles are used in tents for both camping and tourism. These arcs are light in weight and have good strength characteristics. Depending on the design, a tent on such arcs can withstand quite bad weather with strong gusts of wind.

Durapol- composite material. Quite often, this material is called fiberglass reinforced, but in fact its structure is more complex. As a rule, arcs made of this material have a multilayer structure: high-quality fiberglass is covered with a synthetic mesh, then a thin metal film coating and a final coating of unsaturated polymer resins, which securely fastens all layers. Durapolovye arcs are superior in strength and flexibility to glass fiber (fiberglass) arcs, have less permanent deformation and a lower specific gravity. Resistant to impact, corrosion and chemicals.

Aluminum. Aluminum alloys are the most modern materials for archwires. They are durable, not subject to deformation at low temperatures. Depending on the type of alloy, they can vary greatly in performance and, accordingly, in price. Due to their low weight and reliability, aluminum poles are successfully used in extreme and professional tents.

DAC. DAC manufactures some of the world's best tent frames, clips and connectors. DAC - strong and light arcs made of aluminum alloys. It's safe to say that the frames on the DAC arcs are the most technologically advanced in the world. Unique processing technologies for aluminum tubes, perfect design solutions in the development of segment junctions and a well-thought-out load distribution system - this is what distinguishes frames on DAC arches. These arcs are used in extreme tents, tourist tents premium segment and ultra-light tents.

Steel. Steel arches are used, as a rule, in large camping tents, when weight is not of fundamental importance. Very strong and durable, withstand windy weather and heavy loads. Suitable for organizing long-term parking of expeditions, car tourism and camping.

Without frame. Tents without a frame, as a rule, are small in size - for one or two people and are installed on trekking poles or tree branches. Thanks to this, you can save from a few hundred grams to a kilogram of tent weight, which can be significant for a small tourist group or solo tourism.

Inflatable frame. Tents on an inflatable frame have a number of advantages: quick and very easy installation, less weight due to the absence of a classic frame, resistance to wind and shock loads. As a rule, an inflatable frame is a system of inflatable tubes. Each tube has laminated strands, sometimes double strands. It is better to choose a tent with independent inflatable segments, so in case of damage, the tent will not lose stability, the remaining segments will provide sufficient structural strength. As a rule, inflatable frames can be easily repaired. Inflatable frames are used in light tourist tents, but still, they can be seen more often in the segment of large camping tents and family vacation. The disadvantages of such frames are their high cost and low prevalence, and a pump is most often needed to set up a tent.

The American company MSR has been specializing in outdoor equipment since 1969. The brand has received several awards from the Backpacker magazine. Msr tents are easy to set up and light in weight. A single copy has a weight of 1.2 kg, a double one - 2.5 kg, and the average weight of a five-seater product is about 6 kg. The range of the brand is diverse: tents for solo trips and outings in a large company. There are also goods designed for experienced travelers and operation in difficult conditions, simple ones are available - for a group of friends, a weekend hike and an overnight stay on a lake outside the city.

The brand represents the true American quality of tourist equipment: all products are durable and withstand heavy weather. You can safely take the Msr tent on any trip if you have cold overnight stays, stormy conditions, hail, snowstorm. The increased stability of the product is guaranteed by the proprietary design of the arcs and their placement.

The brand's products are divided into three categories: tents for a wide audience; mountaineering, designed for winter hiking and mountain routes; extra light, including for solo travel.

Each tent of this brand is made using modern windproof synthetic materials that do not allow moisture to pass through. Thought out ventilation without heat loss. High wear resistance guarantees dozens, hundreds of trips with a tent from Msr.

Products of the brand are also designed for tall people: even with a height of 195 cm, you can comfortably sleep in a single tent. Instances for groups of 5 or more people are tall, inside you can change clothes, standing upright.

Msr tents are equipped with pegs and guy lines for a secure setup. The design is quickly mounted even in strong winds, if you follow the instructions: first the bottom is fixed, then the rest is assembled. On average, 5-7 minutes are spent on this, it’s not for nothing that the brand’s slogan “Even a child can handle it!”.

MSR – Mountain Security Research

To begin with, I’ll say a few words about MSR (full name Mountain Security Research) - this is a well-known brand under which various equipment has been produced for almost 50 years: tents, burners, tourist water filtration systems, clothes, tools, and so on. Products managed to prove themselves in the circles of tourists and climbers around the world, and some tents are deservedly considered one of the best on the market!

Tent MSR Elixir 2

MSR has a tent that is considered by many to be one of the best for traveling, this is the MSR Hubba Hubba, but I will talk about it in passing, or rather, I will note why I did not buy it, but fixed my eyes on a simpler tent - MSR Elixir 2.

Why Elixir and not Hubba Hubba?

Of course, you can find a simple reason - MSR Hubba Hubba is sensitively more expensive than Elixir, but this was not the main reason for buying the second option. main reason was that the MSR Elixir, in my opinion, has more maintainability in field conditions and has more durable materials. The main sacrifice in favor of this was the weight, it is almost 1 kg. higher than the Hubba Hubba, otherwise - these tents are very similar and Elixir even has some advantages over the opponent - more guy lines and, in my opinion, a more “correct” mesh layout on the inner tent.

And now for the tent itself...

Tent Notes

The MSR Elixir 2 tent, and in general all MSR tents, have a number of remarkable details and solutions that look favorably against the general background, but there are also those that raise doubts and questions.

Equipment

The tent comes in its own bag, which, unlike the Hubba Hubba, is still too simple - a regular bag with a drawstring on top =(No compression straps and other things =(There are only instructions for setting up the tent ...

In the bag we find:

  • Tent floor
  • inner tent
  • Arcs in a separate bag
  • Pegs, 10 pieces, in a separate bag
  • Guys, at least for me, were immediately tied to the loops on the tent (I immediately untied them so as not to interfere and not hang out in vain)

Design

    • Easy and fast installation tents are certainly not a unique feature, but when it is implemented as competently as possible, it is worth noting! Everything is marked by color, it is impossible to confuse.
    • well stretched awning almost completely hides the tent, it helps protect from wind and rain
      • The form tents resembles a dome and, in general, is able to equally withstand the wind from any direction
  • A tent installed without storm lines is enough stable and ready to resist
    • The number of loops for storm guy lines (there are 4 guys included in the kit) makes it possible to fix the tent well on the ground
  • Doors are large and comfortable.. They open sideways and don't get in the way. You can open the lower part of the door and dig into things lying in the vestibule without opening the door completely.
  • Ventilation at the tent good, even in rainy weather dampness was not detected! But the winds in the tent also do not walk! Unlike the Hubba Hubba, the MSR Elixir 2 has mesh at the top of the inner tent, not a solid material, so the steam escapes better!
  • Included with the tent comes the floor, but it is strange, and it is strange in that it does not quite fit in size - its lines are longer than necessary ... But it still remains extremely useful - it protects the inner tent from moisture and small objects!

Doors open sideways and can be rolled up
Doorways are almost vertical, this adds space
The top arc adds structure and makes the entrances vertical

Classic design with crossed arcs
The points of intersection of the arcs are fixed with metal spacers
Hooks are plastic but strong enough

Additional guy loops and awning almost to the ground

Storm guy loops
All attachment points of the tarpaulin can be quickly pulled up with the help of slings.

materials

Velcro on the doors and double zippers
Pockets

Dense material of the bottom of the tent

Joints of sections of different materials
Zippers are neatly sewn
The joints of the sections are stitched with high quality

The bottom is dense and waterproof

Details

  • A special "side" above the entrances to the vestibules works like a drain and does not allow water to drip directly onto our things
  • The double zipper on the awning allows you to open the awning from the top and make an additional vent or see what's going on outside
  • Lock pullers made of cord - a simple solution to reduce weight and noise
  • The plastic tips on the wires are embarrassing, but as it turns out, they are strong enough to cause problems. Although at the first opportunity - I will find and buy spare metal
  • The pegs are round and hook-shaped - a simple solution for the ground, but in stony and sandy areas are stupid
  • durable, as it turned out =) But the concern that you step on them and break them is present.
  • The end of the locks on the awning is far enough away, it is not very convenient to open and close the door
  • It is better to put on the eyelets of the awning right away! If you do this after the awning is fixed, then it is difficult and inconvenient!
  • The ventilation valves on the awning are located well, in their places =), but there is a problem - they cannot be closed or opened from the inside =(
  • Pockets inside the tent are located on both sides, where there is ventilation. They are roomy - you can put small things and stuff a jacket.
  • There are loops in the corners for attaching shelves or something else.

The lock on the awning goes far into the corner - not very convenient

Light and simple pullers with locks

Fastexes for fastening the awning
Fastexes for fastening the awning
Plastic pole tips and eyelets for attaching the tent to the central pole All awning attachment points can be quickly tightened with straps
Loops on the ventilation, which can also be used for quickdraws

Conclusion

I was worried when I bought the MSR Elixir 2 because there was the Hubba Hubba which is famous for being cool, there were other options from Marmot and Black Diamond but it lived up to all expectations! good construction, high-quality materials, a lot of convenient gizmos - completely “paid for” it in my eyes =)

Although the tent is designed for two, there can be enough space for three, and sitting inside is comfortable due to its design - more vertical walls. Dampness does not accumulate in it, and the wind does not walk - therefore it is dry and comfortable in it even in cold and damp weather. She is stable and durable. It is easy to install and also easy to assemble. Well, weight, weight can be distributed between those two that will live in it on a campaign =)
