Sights of Cyprus that are worth a visit reviews of tourists. Road and walking routes in cyprus

In recent years, Cyprus has become one of the most sought after tourist destinations among Russians. And the point here is not only that you can relax on the island all year round, pampering yourself with the warm sun and perfectly clean beaches, but also that many ancient historical monuments are scattered throughout the territory of this paradise, striking in their diversity and magnificence. Ancient temples, fortifications and castles, religious places, magnificent natural landscapes and sea beauties - all this is worth visiting the island at least once in your life. Next, we list 15 main attractions of the island- what to see in Cyprus in the first place, as well as tell you about the most popular routes for car tourists and what places are popular with tourists with children.

But first, we note that earlier, when coming here, tourists mostly stayed within Southern Cyprus, whose territory covers the center and southern part of the island, since the northwestern island regions are occupied by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which is not recognized by the international community. However, today, given the warming of relations between the two Cypriot republics, tourists opened new directions: the western part of the capital Nicosia, the cities of Paphos, Ayia Napa, Famagusta, Kyrenia and Protaras, the Troodos Mountains, the Karpas peninsula and much, much more. All this is of great interest to travelers from all over the world. Therefore, if you decide to visit this piece of paradise, do not forget about Northern Cyprus, what to see there, and there are no less “interesting things” than in the southern part of the island.

The rich heritage of Cyprus - a brief historical background

During its thousand-year history, which began in the era of the pre-ceramic Neolithic (10-6 thousand years BC), Cyprus managed to be both an independent state and a commonwealth of states, as well as a part of all the great "Mediterranean" empires.

So, from the 15th to the 14th centuries BC, there was an independent island state of Alasia, the ruler of which was considered the brother of the Egyptian pharaoh. After the Trojan War, a huge number of Trojans fled to the island, who conquered it and created nine kingdoms here that managed to exist until the 4th century BC.

In ancient times, Cyprus was first part of the Persian state of Ionia, then it was captured for a while by the city-republic of Athens, after which it again became part of Persia. At the end of the ancient period, it was conquered by Alexander the Great, who annexed the island to Hellenic Egypt (the Hellenes are the self-name of the ancient Greeks).

Then it became part of the great Roman Empire, and after its collapse, it went to Byzantium, in which it remained until 1191, when the island was captured by King Richard the Lionheart of England and his crusaders during the Third Crusade.

By the way, King Richard the Lionheart married in Cyprus - the marriage ceremony was held in Church of St. George that in Limassol (this is one of those monuments that you should definitely see in Cyprus).

After the Great Rome, the island first went to the Venetian Republic for one century, then it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, after which it again became part of the British Empire. It existed as a British colony until 1960 when Cyprus became independent. True, almost immediately the island was divided into two parts: the southern part, where Greek Cypriots mainly lived and live; and to the north, where the Turkish Cypriots lived and live (a legacy of the Ottoman period).

What to see in Cyprus: TOP 15 most amazing places on the island

As you can see, there is nothing surprising in the fact that there are so many historical and religious monuments in Cyprus, because it was probably the most significant stronghold in order to control most of the Mediterranean Sea. That is why the island changed hands many times from one empire to another, and that is why fortresses, castles, temples, mosques and various port facilities were built (and destroyed) here, some of which have survived to this day. At the same time, the main attractions of Cyprus that tourists should see are the following places.

TOP 1: The capital Nicosia - a huge number of attractions from different eras

Another place near Paphos that attracts many travelers from all over the world is the rock (actually a cliff) Petra tou Romiou. After Uranus did this, the blood and semen of castrated Uranus fell into the sea not far from the island of Cythera, and at this place the water frothed heavily, and from the foam in the sea after some Aphrodite was born heavenly (there are two of them in ancient legends: heavenly Aphrodite and earthly Aphrodite, who is also called “vulgar”). Another legend says that the Achaeans landed on the same rock after returning from the Trojan War. But the modern name of the rock, which sounds like Petra tou Romiou (mountain of the Romans), comes from the akrit hero Deginis, who is half Greek (Roma) by blood. So, according to another legend, he, being on the Taurus, threw down a huge boulder on the Saracens who attacked the island, and the place where this boulder fell was called the “rock of the Romans”. How to choose a good guide in Cyprus?

Speaking about what to see in Cyprus, it is necessary to talk about how to choose a good guide. Since there are a lot of them here, and at the same time most of of them is emigrants who have only recently arrived on the island and know little about it. So, they are not particularly familiar with the geography of the island, its culture and legends. And if you consider that there is a lot involved in history and legends, then by choosing a “newcomer”, you risk ruining your trip.

To choose a good guide, follow these tips:

  1. Look for a man who knows not only Russian, but also English, Greek and Turkish. Professional guides know all local languages in order to communicate freely not only with tourists, but also with local residents.
  2. Looking for a person with experience as a guide. This, as a rule, is noted in the guide's questionnaire or the tour operator will be able to tell about it.
  3. Look for the one who loves this island and is interested in them. It is easy to notice such people by their constant attention to this topic and mentions of specific dates, names, titles and little-known names.
  4. Look for apolitical person. You should not turn your vacation into talking about politics, which is very often done by migrants who want to indicate their agreement or disagreement with the actions of the Russian authorities in recent years.
  5. Look for someone who not ready to work for a penny. Professional services cannot be provided at a reduced price, even if you are the best friend of a travel agent, a hotel concierge, or a bus driver.
  6. Immediately indicate that you weren't taken shopping, markets and other "partner" points for the sale of souvenirs, rugs, gold, etc.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are plenty of options for what to see in Cyprus, even judging only by the places described above. But do not forget that we have listed only the most important attractions and entertainment areas on the island. The whole list of interesting places in Cyprus will take a whole book, if not more. Jolly and holy Limassol is the second largest city in Cyprus, the port of Limassol is the main Cypriot transport hub and a key player in the Mediterranean trade industry. Economic developments have influenced culture and tourism, contributing to their rapid development.

The best sights of Cyprus, reviews of many tourists, are associated with Limassol. In the area there is a mountain village of Omodos, popular with tourists, where you will get acquainted with the life of medieval Cypriots and in which modern agro-tourism flourishes. It is also famous for the monastery of St. Cross, in the church of which the relics of several saints are kept.

The city itself is still rivaled by adjacent archaeological sites, such as the ruins of a 12th century B.C. the city of Kourion with its earthquake-surviving public Roman baths, an open-air theater built in the 2nd century BC. BC, the ancient city of Amathus, allegedly built by the sons of Hercules, and an art gallery...

Sights of Cyprus photo

If you want to take a photo of the sights in Cyprus, go to the city of Larnaca, it is one of the oldest cities on the island. You personally explore the local winding roads on foot and this is one of the best outdoor activities.

Larnaca's coastal stretch of promenade provides scenic and romantic walks in the evening. The coastline also has a section called the Zenobia Wreck, which was ranked among the ten worst shipwrecks in the world in 2003.

This is a great place to get away from the cityscapes. If you are already fed up with the official Cyprus and the sights of an organized tour, you used the services of a private guide, then take a walk on your own in Larnaca! You can get to Larnaca by public transport or just rent a car in Cyprus.

There you are expected:

Few people know that in the Troodos mountains, snow lies from December to the end of April, and the maximum snowfall for skiing usually falls in January. So northern Cyprus gives attractions in winter.

Have a nice holiday!

The island of Cyprus is a diverse island for recreation and tourism. Any tourist will find entertainment to their taste here. Fans of antiquity can visit medieval castles and fortresses. Temples and monasteries are open for those interested in religious issues.

For family holidays, the aquarium and water parks are well suited. And in between you can relax on the beautiful sandy beaches of the island. However, this is not a complete list of all the attractions on the island. Below is a more complete list of places to visit.

The only caveat of the island is that it is divided into two parts. Greek Cypriots live on one part, and Turks on the other.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, archaeologists discovered a number of graves in which representatives of the nobility were buried. However, despite the name of the place, the kings were never buried here. Why has such a name been fixed? History is silent on this. Perhaps because of the grandeur of some of the tombs, which in their scope are not inferior to the royal ones.

The burial area is quite extensive. Tombs are scattered everywhere and appear in completely unexpected places. And you can easily get lost among the paths and structures.

Built in the Byzantine style, the Archbishop's Palace attracts attention with its elegance and beauty. On the territory of the palace you can find a building of the Gothic style and a cathedral. And between them take a walk through a small pretty garden.

Location: Archiepiskopou Kyprianou Square, Nicosia.

The Baths of Aphrodite is the place where, according to legend, Aphrodite took a bath. The place is a grotto, framed by trees and flowers. In the bath itself, the water is cold enough to take a dip. But nearby there is a stone with stagnant water, from which you can sprinkle water to rejuvenate and gain strength, as the legend says. On the way to the bath, at the place where the path forks, if you go to the left, you can enter and walk through the garden.

The Stones of Aphrodite is another legendary site associated with the goddess of beauty and love. It was from here, according to legend, that Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam to the shore. There is a belief that if a couple in love swims in this bay, they will never part.

However, singles are given a chance in this tradition. According to him, men, having bathed, acquire unprecedented masculine strength. And women, having swum around the rock, become much younger than their years.

Location: Petra tou Romiou beach.

Not many crops are grown in Cyprus. One of them is grapes. Therefore, the production of wines on the island is historically well developed. It is diverse. One of the most famous brands is KEO.

Introductory tours are held at the KEO factory, where they talk about the wine production process in detail. They lead them through the halls where the grapes are pressed, go down to the cellars where the bottles are stored. And at the end, a tasting of local brands of wines is offered. The wines you like can be purchased right there in the shop at the factory.

Near the old port, surrounded by ancient streets and houses, in the town of Limassol there is a medieval castle. According to legend, Richard the Lionheart himself married his bride here.

Now there is a museum dedicated to that period. Visitors can admire the collection of armor and various weapons.

Additionally, you can climb to the roof by a spiral staircase and enjoy the panorama of the city.

The fortifications of the city were built during the Byzantine era. A wall was built along the perimeter of the city, and two towers were the gates to the port. At the end of the 15th century, there was a strong earthquake, as a result of which one of the towers was destroyed. The military settled the Ford in the second tower.

The ford is located at the end of the embankment, and you can enter it completely free of charge. Inside, no exhibits are presented, apart from the bare walls. At the top is an observation deck. However, you will have to pay to get there.

Near the city of Limassol is a well-preserved medieval fortress. Its name comes from the name of the first owner of the castle, feudal lord Garinus de Colossus. Then for a long time this castle was used as the residence of the Knights Templar. There are even ancient frescoes inside.

For a small fee, you can visit the vast premises of the three-story castle, where various exhibitions are held, as well as go to the observation deck on the roof.

Kyrenia Castle (Northern Cyprus)

On the Turkish territory of the island in the port of Kyrenia is the Kyrenia Castle, founded by the Byzantines. The castle was used at different times as a military and as a police base. Now there are shipwreck museums, a torture museum and various exhibits demonstrating the weapons and life of that era. On the roof you can see the surrounding landscapes from a height.

Buffavento Castle (Northern Cyprus)

Buffavento Castle on the north side of Cyprus is located on a mountain, and it will take about 4 kilometers to climb to it. It will take around 30-40 minutes. Therefore, it is advisable not to climb in the very heat and heat, so as not to expose the body to excessive stress. But from the top it offers a magnificent view of the northern coast of the island.

The castle is located so high for a reason. It was built by the Byzantines to protect against Muslim raids and served as a good outpost for monitoring the coastal zone. Later there was a prison for especially dangerous criminals.

The castle got its name from the phrase in Italian "merry winds", due to the fact that strong winds always blow here.

There are also many different legends associated with it. One of them tells about a healing spring, where you can be cured of all diseases, which is located nearby. But, unfortunately, it will not be possible to visit it, since it is located on the territory of a military base.

Ghost town of Varosha (Northern Cyprus)

In the northern part of Cyprus, where the Turkish side is located, you can find the abandoned ghost town of Varosha. At one time it was a very pretentious resort where celebrities and the rich rested. White sand for the beach was specially brought from Egypt, and hotels offered comfortable rooms.

But in 1974, one day, due to a political upheaval, people had to urgently leave the city. The city was surrounded by a fence, prohibition signs were hung out and guards were put up.

Photography is still prohibited on the territory, but you can admire the gloomy abandoned buildings from the beach of Famagust.

Near the city of Larnaca there is a salt lake. However, in the fall you may not notice it. During this period, the lake dries up and looks like a white desert. After winter, when the rainy season begins, it is filled with water, about 10 centimeters deep. At the end of spring, pink flamingos arrive here, and you can watch them all summer.

There is another attraction on the shore of the lake - the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque, one of the world's main Muslim shrines, but only men are allowed to enter there.

Near the village of Khirokitia, archaeologists dug up an ancient settlement dating back to the 7th-9th centuries BC. The settlement is included in the UNESCO protection lists.

On the territory of the complex there are reconstructions of the dwellings of local settlers. You can wander through the excavations, imagining how ancient people led their lives. An interesting point is that the inhabitants of their dead were buried right there, under the floor of their dwellings.

In the city of Paphos, in order to hide from persecution, the early Christians dug catacombs for themselves, where they lived, prayed and buried the dead. Catacombs are a network of caves used for various purposes, and corridors connecting them. At the very bottom of the caves there was a well, where, according to legend, there is water that helps to cure eye diseases.

For a visit, it is advised to grab a flashlight to highlight in especially dark places. The entrance is free.

The male monastery in Kykkos is one of the most famous monasteries in Cyprus. The miraculous icon of the Mother of God is kept within its walls. Inside the monastery, there are frescoes on the walls telling about the history of the appearance of the famous icon.

The monastery itself is located on a mountain surrounded by beautiful landscapes.

The oldest city excavated in Cyprus is Amathus. Its age is over 3000 years. Walking along the streets of the town, you can explore the location of the houses, their size. The remains of the temple of Aphrodite are scattered on the hillock, where you can admire a huge stone vase with images of bulls on the sides. In the 12th century, the city was captured by Richard the Lionheart and razed to the ground.

A small oceanarium in Protaras offers a variety of inhabitants of the Mediterranean seabed. Here, without special equipment, you can immerse yourself in the study of the life of marine life, watching them through the glass of aquariums.

In addition to the inhabitants of sea waters, enclosures with other animals are presented at the exit. A family of penguins live in a specially covered pool. You can visit the aviary with crocodiles. Also see raccoon, rabbits and various birds.

Tired of walking, children can immediately relax by riding small rides, while adults at this time have a bite to eat in a cafe located nearby.

Location: 5318 Cavo Greco Avenue - 19.

For those who want to diversify their beach holiday, but not refuse water procedures, the Aphrodite water park in the city of Paphos is offered. Various attractions are provided here, both for those who like to tickle their nerves, and more calm and quiet ones. Variants of slides are also presented for very young visitors.

Tickets to the water park will be cheaper if you buy them in advance via the Internet. There are showers and changing rooms, which are free of charge, as well as sun loungers where you can relax during breaks. If you wish, you can leave things in a special locker, but money will be written off for this at the exit. There is also a cafe.

Location: Off Poseidonos Avenue.

Nissi Beach is located two kilometers from the city of Ayia Napa. This is a bay with dazzling blue water. It is so transparent that every grain of sand is visible. True, the depth here is not great, 20-25 centimeters, but the water is always well warmed up. You can soak in a warm bath.

Unlike other beaches in Cyprus, where the beach is mostly black volcanic sand, here lies imported white fine sand, in which feet are easily buried.

From entertainment, various water attractions are offered, such as water skiing, catamarans, banana and parachuting, and others. For lovers of scuba diving, diving with experienced instructors to the depths is offered.

Cyprus is a favorite holiday destination for many Russians. Many museums, rich nature, ruins of ancient cities, clean beaches, interesting architecture, amazing climate - all this you will definitely find on the island. Contrary to popular belief, there is a lot to see in Cyprus. Yes, the island is small, but there are a lot of excursions here. In this article, I will not describe all the excursions and entertainment. The guides of your tour operator will do it for me. Not a single tourist has left this procedure yet. We will consider only those places that will fully reveal the culture of this country, and also find out how it is more profitable - through an agency or to see each attraction on your own. So, let's begin.

In this article, we analyze:

Nicosia or the capital of two states

This is a must see in Cyprus - the world's only capital city of two countries! An ideal place to experience the culture and history of the island. Here is the Archaeological Museum - one of the best in the country. The museum contains exhibits from prehistoric times! The museum helps a lot to look at the world and modernity in a different way. You can get to the museum both as part of a sightseeing tour of Nicosia (≈40 euros per person, the presence of a museum in the program depends on the organizer), and on your own (≈5 euros for an entrance ticket).

Nicosia is easy to explore on your own, especially if you rent a car. It's cheaper and more interesting. You can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the old quarters. For example, in Buyuk-Khan - the largest caravanserai in Cyprus, excursion groups drop in rarely, but in vain. It was built by the Turks back in 1572 and is still in excellent condition. Today it houses souvenir shops and coffee houses. By all means look into one of them and taste real Cypriot coffee, it will pleasantly surprise you

After a historical and cultural immersion, visit the atmospheric Hammam Omeriye. The incredible beauty of the hammam building was built by the Ottomans in 1571 and is still functioning! These people really know a lot about two things: how to build and in the art of bathing!

Troodos mountains: sheep and cherry orchards

The Troodos Mountains are especially nice in summer. You can hide from the annoying heat, enjoy the purest air, the scent of pine trees and see mouflons - a rare variety of sheep and one of the symbols of the island. There are ten UNESCO temples in Troodos! There are no noisy tourist groups here. Only silence, majestic mountain peaks, unique Byzantine architecture of monasteries and lost authentic villages with cherry orchards, mountain springs and temples.

I recommend going to Troodos with an excursion (≈40 euros). Without a guide, it will be difficult to understand the nuances of the architecture and history of these places. Difficult mountain roads and many interesting, beautiful, but hidden from a stranger places are also not conducive to self-examination.

Larnaca or castle, mosque, flamingos

Sightseeing tours are led around Larnaca (≈40 euros). It usually includes only temples, monasteries and the church of St. Lazarus. Interestingly, in general, not everyone. There are more interesting places in the city that are rarely included in group tours and they are all freely available.

The most interesting objects of the city are the Larnaca Castle and the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque. If the castle is interesting in itself, then there is a whole epic behind the mosque. It was built in honor of a woman - a rare case in Islam. Her name was Umm Haram. Together with her husband, she went to conquer Cyprus, where she found her death. Only not enemy arrows and not a sharp sword killed this revered lady, but only an unsuccessful fall from a mule ... By the way, they say that the stone on her tomb is not a stone at all, but a real huge meteorite.

Flamingos often fly to the Salt Lake in Larnaca. It is right behind the mosque, so do not be too lazy to go there.

Are the beaches of Ayia Napa an attraction?

Ayia Napa has been awarded international recognition in the form of blue flags - a sign of safety and cleanliness of the beaches. In addition, Ayia Napa attracts tourists with a cool water park and ancient grottoes. In general, I always recommend to my tourists to choose hotels here (well, or in Protaras at least). Hotels here are more expensive than in other areas. But the best beaches in Cyprus are worth every ruble spent. You can also get to Ayia Napa with an excursion (≈30 euros). Expensive and somehow sad - for the money to watch how others rest.

Protaras and Limassol

The dancing fountains in Protaras are the best entertainment in Cyprus. The fountain show can only be seen on weekday evenings from April to November. If you live in Ayia Napa or Protaras, you can take buses 101 and 102 to the fountains. Combine the show with dinner at one of the taverns nearby the fountains. Just book your seats early.

There are few entertainments in Protaras. In addition to the fountain show, there is also an aquarium. Tours are offered to everyone without exception. The entrance ticket is inexpensive (≈14 euros + transfer), but the oceanarium does not even work off this money. Tourists are very unhappy with this place. I believe them.

Limassol is also not the place where you need to go on purpose. Don't waste a lot of time and money on it. But if your hotel is located nearby, be sure to take a walk along the promenade to the harbor and Limassol Castle.

Paphos ... but what do you know about it?

As you understand, Limassol and Protaras are not very interesting for sightseeing holidays. Another thing - Paphos! One name of this resort city does not allow you to ignore it. Visit it at least so that upon arrival you can say to your friends in a businesslike manner: “What do you know about pathos?”. By the way, contrary to the meaning that Russian speakers often put into this word, it is in Paphos that one of the most budget hotels in Cyprus is located.

Among the attractions here you will find:

  • medieval fortress;
  • archeopark;
  • catacombs;
  • royal tombs;
  • beautiful embankment;
  • beach of Aphrodite;
  • and a couple of ancient monasteries.

I will not list each one. You can explore all these places both on your own and with a sightseeing tour of Paphos (≈40 euros). If you are traveling with a large family or company, then it is more profitable to rent a car. No serious difficulties will arise. If you are two or three people, it is more profitable to take a tour.

A few words about Kyrenia

Perhaps this is the best and most interesting place in Cyprus! It is easily accessible by car, but I recommend taking a guided tour (≈50 euros). Kyrenia is a port city in Northern Cyprus. Known primarily for its medieval harbor, romantic atmosphere, stunning views of the bay, the sea and the coast of neighboring Turkey! Not far from Kyrenia is the impregnable castle of St. Hilarion and the Bellapais Abbey, the ruins of which would organically fit into the entourage of the famous television series Game of Thrones.

The dead city of Famagusta

Half a century ago, Famagusta was the center of the resort life of the island. Prominent statesmen, politicians and businessmen rested here. The resort was considered elite. They came here to spend money. Today, Famagusta is a dead city, a resort where, apart from dilapidated hotels and dilapidated houses, there is nothing. Want to see what the world will look like after people disappear? That way. The contrast of amazing sandy beaches, abandoned once luxurious five-star hotels and the very sad history of the city will cause more than one herd of goosebumps.

I do not recommend going to Famagusta on your own, although it is possible. To feel this place, you need a good guide, preferably from the former inhabitants of the dead city. Excursions are inexpensive (≈35 euros), but there are also more expensive ones, depending on the occupancy.

Gastronomy & souvenirs

Gastro tour (≈36 euros) is the best way to try the national cuisine and wine. Of course, in any traditional tavern you can try local dishes, but only on a gastro tour you can taste several types of cheeses, sweets, wine, olives, butter, honey and listen to a lecture on the Mediterranean diet. After that, you will know exactly what to bring friends as a gift and what not to. Well, do not forget to try the famous Commandaria or "wine of kings" - a national wine made according to a special old recipe from a mix of white and red grapes. They say that the recipe is still classified at the state level so that the wine is not produced in other countries. I don't know how true this is, but why don't you find out?

There are much more excursions, attractions and entertainment in Cyprus than I described above. Temples, monasteries, donkey rides and a Cypriot evening are included in almost any sightseeing tour. If you plan to take several excursions, carefully check their programs. Many places and attractions can overlap, so if you oversight, visit the same place twice. Well, that's all. Happy holidays!
