What I like about Croatia is its names. Here, for example - Krk. Try it, speak up! Abbreviation? No matter how! The name of the island and the city of the same name on it. Thoughtfully moving your finger along the map in search of a place to spend the night between and Plitvice Lakes, where I intend to stop by and definitely spend the night there, I run into Krk. The name captivates me instantly! And the study of a couple of pictures from the Internet leaves no doubts - #hit! Yes, by the way, in Croatia there is also the Krk Nature Reserve. Well, it's not located on an island. Do not confuse if you are planning lakes and waterfalls - then you are in the Dalmatia region, not in Kvarner!))

For the "go", however, we do not choose the best route.
Accustomed to the insignificant heights of Istria, and possessing a love for rural roads, we decide to go with them. Oh people, oh gods! Don't make such a mistake! Somewhere beyond Pula, mountains appear very serious with extremely unpleasant serpentines. The navigator affably informed that since we did this, now we ourselves, ourselves, he is not responsible for anything, he does not see satellites. This made us not weakly get lost in the mountains. In short, when we finally drove up to Uchka Mountain, towering not far from Opatija, and saw the road down to the sea, we didn’t even think to go out to the observation deck and take a couple of pictures of the opening beauty there. It's a shame! People go from afar to this Uchka to capture themselves in the background, and we just crawled (it’s impossible to fly there - the roads are steep) past.

We are already "below" going from Rijeka to the bridge to Krk
What is interesting about the road we have chosen is that it passes by two popular resorts in Croatia - Opatija and Rijeka. And if Opatija is a resort, and very expensive and fashionable, then Rijeka is a huge city by resort standards with heavy traffic and a developed road network. And we are going to the bridge to the island of Krk. Traveling on it is paid, you can see the cost of the train on the poster, something like 6.5 euros turns out, if I'm not mistaken. Payment, traditionally, at special checkpoints located on the road. Pay immediately and only in one direction. Well, of course - the island! Although they could take for movement in both directions :) The bridge is considered long - 1.4 km. Initially, it was called the Titov Bridge, as it was built during the time of Joseph Tito. Which, by the way, the adult population still loves.

Even in the process of moving along the bridge, you can see what a striking difference between the nature of the island and mainland parts of Croatia. "Two big differences," as we say in Odessa. Island - flatter, rocky, low dense shrubs, I can imagine what kind of winds there are in winter! Something elusively reminded native Crimea.

These are the views from the Krk bridge
In reality, there are not many settlements on the island where it is worth stopping and spending time. I chose between Krk, Vrbnik Malinska and, located on the farthest edge from the mainland, Baska with its luxurious beach. But, since both the beach was a must and the beautiful city was a must, settled on Krk. To be honest, you can spend at least a week here, but always with a car. There is something to see, where to take a walk. Good, right island. For us, it is only a place for an intermediate overnight stay - I like short hauls while traveling. I booked an apartment "on the edge" of the city. Building is new, hard to find. But it is close to the beach. Although, everything is very close here - the distances in the city of Krk for residents of megacities are childish.

The owner of the apartment is a Bosnian. This is where his family fled from the horrors of the Yugoslav war. Of course, we talked about it with him. In fact, he is with us. Listening is terrible. To understand that the world is at war every day is even more creepy. To know that there is a war in your country .... In short, no one needs such experience.
The family owns two apartment hotels. We lived in a new, just built. I really liked how they thought of all the little things for a cozy resort holiday. There is everything - up to dryers on the balcony! And the bathroom is also coolly placed - right in the middle of the room, zoning it into the sleeping part and the dining room. After carefully examining everything and throwing things, we walk to the sea.

If we talk about beaches, then there are many beaches near the city of Krk. Starting from the very center of the village, there are several cultural, equipped beaches. Here, usually, there are mothers with children. The last of them is located just behind a large campsite located right on the shore. And from this last beach, such paths run along the sea to other, wild beaches. On which vacationers are also very, very enough. By the way, I met a snake while walking. What? God knows, but it doesn't look like a snake or snake. Be careful there!

The water is amazingly clear. And no wonder - the bottom is rocky. Very large "pebbles", I would say almost cobblestones. There are living creatures. First of all - hedgehogs. So slippers are a must-have accessory on the beaches of Krk. And the biggest surprise is that the water turned out to be downright icy! The difference between the water temperature in Rovinj, where we swam yesterday, and Krk, is striking! We are talking about the end of June, by the way.

Croatia is an amazing place for sea lovers. Yes, the whole Mediterranean is like that! Sometimes it seems to me that in a past life I lived somewhere here, on the Mediterranean Sea. I don’t know of another such place where I would be drawn to return and where I would like to live for a long, long time) Well, except that I would spend a couple of years in Africa! Of course, there are a lot of yachts and catamarans from all over Europe. The Germans, as always, are in the lead. Extremely easy-going nation.

Travelers by the sea
Croatia is also great for camping. In general, camping is a good way to travel by car. Maybe someday we'll try. Moreover, at the campsite you can stay in your own camper, renting only a place, you can choose the option of car + own tent or car + bungalow. What I don’t like about the option with a tent is that having my own bathroom and my own shower is paramount for me. And although such amenities are provided in the bungalows, the price for them is comparable to the price of apartments. And living conditions are worse. In short, twice going and twice did not dare. I liked camping in Krk. Great location, wonderful area with fluffy pine trees and private beaches. Decent option for a holiday.

The city of Krk, in the center of which we go after the beach, is the capital of the island of the same name. I will say that the ancients knew how to choose good places for the construction of their settlements! The island of Krk is considered one of the main centers of Croatian culture, it was here in the city of Baska that the famous Bascan Plate (Bascanska ploca) was found - one of the first written records of the Croats. However, the city of Krk traces its history back to the ancient Romans. The ancient Roman forum is still "preserved" here. True, in the Middle Ages, the buildings of the council and the town hall were built on its territory, as well as a well was dug. Therefore, the forum has a medieval look).

By the way, fishing in Croatia (and Krk) is all right. They are caught both by amateurs with a bait and by professional sailors in an industrial way. While we were wandering around the port, several schooners left the pier and set off to sea. And the fishermen are picturesque))

But this "cute" submarine entertains tourists. How do people agree to dive in such a vessel under water in a sober mind and sound memory? I won't put my mind to it! But business is on!

I don’t know to whom and why this monument is standing on the Krk embankment, probably so that men can hold it by the chest)). Judging by the color of the bulges, the attraction is popular.

And here is the central square, the one that was the former forum, and now just Vela Placa. Krk is not as elegant as Rovinj, it is "simpler", but also worthy of attention. What is worth seeing in the city? Honestly, in such tiny towns without much "legends" I prefer to just wander the streets. But I'll tell you about something here, of course.

As always, the tourist streets beckon with gloss and little useful shopping. And the "residential" streets look simpler. In general, in Krk everything is without frills, in a simple way. Polished pavement slabs, window shutters, awnings. Lots of colors, as always.

Krk is spread out on the side of a mountain. In the upper part there are a couple of temples and the beautiful Kamplin Square. Krk, like all medieval cities, was once surrounded by a fortress wall. And this wall is here. They are so ancient, these walls, that, as the legend says, even under the Romans they were already standing! Although it seems to me more reliable information that they were built in the period of 12-14 centuries. Here, in Krk, the rise of the family of Frankopan princes began, one of the oldest and richest Croatian tribal dynasties, whose representatives repeatedly became bans of Croatia (rulers appointed by the king). What you need to do here: take a walk in the square near the fortress wall, look through the loopholes, eat pizza. The square we are in is called Kamplin. Its name (derived from the Latin words camplin / campellus) suggests that under the Romans, sports competitions and military tournaments were held here.

Here it is, Krk fortress

And this is the same courtyard.
There is another nice place in this part of the city. More precisely, two. One thing I did not photograph - I was shy. But you will definitely look for it - a small private museum of all kinds of marine differences: ship models, navigational instruments, sailors' tools. The museum is located near the back of the church, which I will now show.
The Church of St. Kvirina (Crkva svetog Kvirina), built in the 12th century, is one of the sights of the city. It is visible from anywhere in the city. The temple is decorated with a bell tower with a characteristic "onion" dome, built in the 16th century. A funny trumpeter on the spire of the tower was a weather vane. Just imagine its natural size! Although I'm not sure that now the trumpeter acts as a weather vane. It hurts securely fastened.

mentioned tower
Then we go through narrow streets to look for the upper entrance to the old city, and at the same time a place that is conditionally called the place of saints. There are several cathedrals here at once: the Benedictine monastery, the church of St. Michael.

The only modern modern building in the old part of Krk is a school with such a sports complex. I don't know about you, but I get aesthetic pleasure from such architecture. Surprisingly, it does not spoil the city!

Well, we again went down to the Forum, to the lower gates of the fortress, where local talented girls sing Queen covers. They sing well, honestly.

What else haven't I talked about? About food. In Croatia, the food is delicious, but very "spoiled" by the Italian influence. Lots of pizzerias. It's good - because the pizzas are cheap, tasty and huge. I just ate them and now I don’t really like them)).
And here, in Krk, I tried one of the most wonderful ice creams - lavender.
Yes, in Slovenia and Croatia, the cult of lavender. She is everywhere. But lavender ice cream is the height of perfection. It's worth coming here just for that.

Having finished walking around the city, we return home to our apartments, sincerely regretting that the vacation is ending, and tomorrow we say goodbye to the sea, we go deep into the continent and - home, home! It seems that not only we regret our departure, but also this wonderful dog)).

Krk has its own airport, but if there is no suitable flight from your city, you can arrive by plane to Pula, and then arrive on the island in an hour by taxi or an hour and a half by bus. The distance between Pula and Krk reaches more than 10 km. But still, back to the local air terminal - "Rijeka". Previously, it was very popular, but the appearance of an amazing highway to the capital made it not very crowded. Many tourists prefer to fly to Zagreb, admire its sights, and then rent a car and go to Krk, visiting other Croatian "interesting places" along the way. True, a number of low-cost airlines have been closely watching Rijeka Airport lately, so it is possible that the airport will “come to life” and become one of the most frequently visited. Buses run from the airport to different settlements of the city, there is a taxi service and a car rental office. For the cost of a taxi, focus on $ 1 for each kilometer of the way, but by bus you can cover the same distance 2-4 times cheaper (depending on the end point of the trip). All details about Rijeka Airport can be found at www.rijeka-airport.hr.

Island of Krk- not just a picturesque place to relax, it is one of the central centers of Croatian culture. There is something to see here, both in the direction of the architectural heritage, and spiritual or cultural monuments. For example, in the cozy town of Baska, famous for its wonderful beaches all over the planet, one of the oldest monuments of the country flaunts, symbolizing the first written mention of the Croatian people. The locals are very proud of being involved in the history of the birth of their people, so you can ask anyone where the famous “Bascanska ploca” is located, which means “Bashchanskaya Plate” in translation, and you will certainly be shown the right direction.

By the way, the slab was found in the form of a fragment of the floor in the miraculous church of St. Lucia, which can still be admired in the settlement of Jurandor.
Love military history? Then by all means visit the city of Krk, which is replete with defensive structures erected in the 12th century. In addition to the mighty walls, a high tower has miraculously survived to this day, from which the soldiers watched the city, and even the castle - “Frankopansky”. Connoisseurs of church places will be interested in visiting the legendary temple, originally from the 5th century, bearing the name of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is located in the heart of Krk. By the way, the bell tower of the cathedral is decorated with a touching figurine of an angel, which is visible from virtually every corner of the city. However, the illustrious church is framed by no less wonderful temples, just not so old and large, but they all make you breathless, because they are majestic in appearance, amazingly decorated inside, and visiting them brings peace.

It is worth coming to Omišalj to see the fragments of the city that miraculously survived to this day, which was born during the reign of the Roman Empire.
The city of Vrbnik is a kind of fortress that came to visit from the past, since most of the medieval defensive structures stand strong and majestic, as in the old days.
The natural attractions of the island are also worthy of attention, one of the most famous of these is the Biseruika cave, which was formed from karst rocks, apparently a long time ago, but was discovered by mankind only in 1834. This place is one of the most visited among its kind in the country.

The beauty of stalactite and stalagmite patterns and the quirkiness of lines strikes the eye of even the most creative natures, because it is hard to believe that such natural paintings arose spontaneously. But they exist and are ready to surprise you with their unique beauty.
If you are in the city of Punat, then by all means take a walk through the botanical garden, which is one of the best in Croatia.

Where to stay on the island

As well as throughout the country, the island has a lot of all kinds of accommodation offers, ranging from five-star hotel giants to a bed in the private sector. You are free to choose what you “like”, however, fans of the island of Krk advise you to do this in advance, since in the season it can be problematic to find a suitable option upon arrival. This is not a minus for the resort, but rather a plus, the main thing is to know that pre-ordering housing will make your vacation “cloudless”.
What hotels are worth paying attention to?

If we talk about the heart of the island - the city of Krk, then the hotel "Marina" is worthy of attention, located right at the pier, from the rooms of which you can see the blue waters of the Adriatic and the colorful edge of the sea lulling you with its wonderful sounds. Nearby (300 m) there is also an amazing park. A double room costs about $150 per night. By the way, breakfast is included in the price.
In the city of Baska, because of one of the best beaches of the Adriatic, the Atrium Residence hotel is praised, where two can stay for $ 100. The address is Emila Geistlicha, 39.

In Punat, pay attention to the Kanajt hotel, "registered" at the address: Kanajt No. 5, located on the territory of the famous yacht club. Interesting personalities gather here, ready to race with you under sail. From the windows of the hotel you can see not only the sea, but also the olive grove. A double room starts at $130.

No less wonderful than all over the country. Local restaurateurs are famous craftsmen and hospitable people. This is especially felt in konoba - small restaurants that families open - by vocation and for income. In Krk, the most colorful of these is the konoba "Nono". It is also worth a look at Andreja. Would you like to dine in a fancy restaurant? Welcome to "Galeb", which flaunts on the central square of Krk.
In Baska, be sure to sample wonderful homemade wine in the Volta konoba and fresh, melt-in-your-mouth fish in the Cicibela restaurant.

The largest of the Croatian islands - Krk is located in the heart of the Kvarner Bay, in close proximity to Opatija, Rijeka and Crikvenica. Thanks to the large bridge connecting it to the mainland, it is easily accessible by car or bus. In addition, the island of Krk boasts its own international airport, but Russian airlines do not use it, so our tourists can get to Krk from the airport in Pula (104 km).

An amazing variety of landscapes, rich traditions and a large selection of beaches, including sandy ones, have made holidays on the island of Krk popular among foreign tourists. The most visited resorts are: Malinska and Omišalj in the western part of the island, next to the Krk bridge, the Punat resort near the city of Krk, which is the capital of the island, and the Baška resort on the southern tip of the island.
