Well, by popular demand, this story will be about the wonderful German town of Freiburg, through which our route of "emigration" from Germany to Switzerland ran.
City of Freedom (this is how I translated it literally) is quite like that Big city with a population of more than 200 thousand people and its own university, where even Erasmus of Rotterdam himself studied.

The city has been leading its history since 1120. Around the same time, the first stone was laid in the foundation of the most beautiful tower of Christianity - freiburg münster a. It is so large (116 meters) that I decided to place its photograph glued from 4 shots in this way.

And here is the university (on the right) - the largest center of European humanism in the Middle Ages:

But first, let's enter the city from the other end - through the gates of St. Martin (Martinstor).

- "Where does the Russian double-headed eagle come from?" - you ask. - "And he is not Russian" - I will answer. These are all symbols of the power of the Holy Roman Empire.
And next to it, by chance, harmoniously and in color, there is a sign "Poppy" - also a kind of symbol of power over human stomachs.

We pass through the arch and find ourselves (or find ourselves?) On Kaiserstrasse - a crowded street:

The tower is also terribly ancient - it has been standing here since 1201. The truth looked before 1901, it is a little different. Like this:

Then it was built up a little and it began to look like this:

During World War II, the city had a difficult time. First, on May 9, 1940, Freiburg was bombarded by air, resulting in casualties and destruction. German newspapers and radio, with references to the General Staff and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that the city was bombed by French aircraft, which was based on the territory of neutral Holland and Belgium. In an official statement from Berlin, it was reported that by doing so, Brussels and Amsterdam violated the neutrality agreements. The next day, May 10, 1940, the Wehrmacht launched an invasion of Holland and Belgium. Now it is clear who was the teacher of the Americans ...

After the war, information appeared that the 51st Luftwaffe bomber squadron, led by Josef Kammhuber, made a raid on Freiburg.

No sooner had the city recovered from the destruction than on November 27, 1944, on the direct orders of Churchill, the city was slightly less than completely bombed by the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. Here is a photo of those times (it is quite large - click and view):

It is noteworthy that the bombing almost did not affect the Freiburg Münster - neither the first nor the second time.

True, now the worst enemy of Münster is Time, which is why in all modern photographs the cathedral looks like this:

The Cathedral of Our Lady, as it is called, took 300 years to build. Therefore, its architecture combines three styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. Due to scaffolding, unfortunately, its openwork, carved spire is not visible.

Street leading to Cathedral Square:

The cathedral is also famous for its abundance of whimsical gutter decorations, found only in a few Gothic cathedrals. Among other things, there is a human figure in which water flows out of a bare backside - it is assumed that the backside was directed by the masons towards the residence of the bishop who owed them money.

And the other urban legend says that all the inhabitants of the houses adjacent to the construction site donated money for the construction of the Freiburg Münster. And only one homeowner refused to make a donation. It is to his house that a single figure is directed, located at the back of the body.

On Saturdays, a farmers' market opens on Cathedral Square, where you can buy the famous Black Forest ham, smoked on spruce and pine cones from the nearby Black Forest.

Local craftsmen are also famous for their wood products:

Well, how can you leave here without trying the local sausages?
She's cooking for me right now :)

But, as they say, not by bread alone... We go inside the cathedral.

Catholic cathedrals have always amazed me with their interior space. But this one...

This one was so mesmerizing that I even wanted to sit here on a bench for a while. The children didn't mind either - they quietly stared at everything with their mouths open :) And it was not in vain that they stayed - the rehearsal of the organ concert began. Feelings are unforgettable.

After the organ, I just wanted to wander around the streets of the city.

Have I already written about the big ones? Cool carts for children here in Europe. Hooked to the trunk and forward. But isn't it dangerous?

And here, along the sidewalks, rivers flow in gutters. They are called "baechle". Such clean ones.

The city is generally very beautiful. Especially in summer and winter, when it still glows with garlands.

Look what an idyll:

And here is the courtyard of one of the houses:

Another street:

This is one of the central

If you walk along it, then along the way you will meet the famous hotel "At the Red Bear" ("Zum Roten Baeren") - the oldest in Germany, leading its history from 1120.
True, the bear has already managed to become golden by our time ...

And at the end of the street is another attraction - the Swabian Gate (Schwabentor). The lower floor of this gate tower dates back to the 13th century, but the main part of the building was erected in 1901 in the style of the 15th century. In 1904-1905. not far from here, in a boarding house at Wallstrasse 10, the sisters Marina and Anastasia Tsvetaeva lived and studied.

Unfortunately, we are lucky for restoration and the "attraction" as always turned out to be closed by scaffolding.

Augustinerplatz:

Another signature feature of Freiburg is colored pavements made from halves of Rhine coastal pebbles:

The youngest already got used to the city and ran ahead :)

At the cathedral. Dogs touch Germans much more than small children. :)

Piss-piss in the grass... Why?

Well, I'll touch on the topic of immigrants a little. This is how guests of the sunny republics of countries earn a living.

Everyone knows what's funny? :)

Well, everything, we got to the Danube. Whoever reads the next post will know where this one originates from. great river:) Do not google in advance!

The settlement of servants and craftsmen at the foot of the mountain was granted market and town rights by Berthold's son Conrad in 1120. Around 1200, Berthold V ordered that today's Freiburg Münster (German: Freiburger Münster) be built on the site of the too small church at that time. The construction was financed primarily by the income of the silver mines in the Black Forest, which greatly contributed to the prosperity of the citizens of Freiburg.

After the extinction of the Zähringens, the Counts von Urach took over the dominance in 1218 and henceforth called themselves the Counts of Freiburg. After frequent disputes with the counts over financial matters, in 1368 the citizens of Freiburg bought off the dominance of the unloved Egino III and assumed the protection of the House of Habsburg.

At the Battle of Sempach in 1386, the Swiss defeated the troops of the Austrian Duke Leopold III and destroyed part of the Freiburg nobility. Back then, the guilds dominated the city council. Freiburg was until 1427 an imperial city and was not part of any state. In 1457, Archduke Albrecht VI created.
