Tourist visa to Canada: how to get it yourself online and through the visa application center

Russians will need to obtain a visa to travel to Canada. It is not very difficult to make it, but you need to take care of it in advance. A visa to Canada can be done online or through a visa application center. But in any case, after approval, you will need to contact the visa center so that they send the passport to the Embassy for gluing a visa into it.

To enter Canada and not be rejected, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a valid passport.
  • Good health.
  • Do not qualify as persons who are denied entry (for example, persons with serious financial or health problems, violators of the law, if your family members were refused, etc.).
  • Prove that you will leave Canada before the visa expires and will not stay there illegally.
  • Have enough money to travel.

You may need to:

  • Pass a medical examination.
  • Get a written invitation.
  • Confirm your legal residence in the Russian Federation if you are a foreigner.

How to get a visa to Canada

We will consider applying for a regular temporary resident (tourist) visa. For other purposes of the trip, additional documents may be required to confirm it (for example, an invitation from a local organization or individual).

As of February 6, 2014, single-entry visas to Canada are no longer issued. Now only multiple-entry visas are issued to everyone.

A multiple-entry visa allows you to enter it an unlimited number of times during the validity of the document. It is issued for a maximum of 10 years, or until the expiration of the passport.

Online submission of documents

    • Take a short test on the site in English so that the system can determine the type of visa you need. At the end, you will receive a personal code that you will need to save. It will come in handy for filling out the IMM5257 visa application form.

Many people have a problem opening the questionnaire in the browser on the official website due to Adobe Reader errors (requires installing a new version). To successfully open it, launch Adobe Reader on your computer and manually open the saved PDF file with the questionnaire.

  • Fill out the form on your computer and save it. You do not need to print and sign it.
  • Follow the link and register to get GCKey - this is your account where you will need to upload all documents.
  • When registering, use a nickname of at least 8 characters, otherwise the form will need to be filled out again. The password must also be at least 8 characters long, made up of uppercase, lowercase letters and numbers.
  • After creating an account, you will need to enter your security question and answer. They can only be written in English (it can be transliterated).
  • Sign in to your account and enter a security answer. You will also need to enter your personal code, which you received at the very beginning.
  • You have up to 60 days to collect your Canadian visa documents, which must be uploaded through this site in jpg, pdf or docx format, no larger than 4 megabytes.

You will need to upload the following documents to the Supporting Documents section:

  • Application for Temporary Resident Visa- pdf file with the completed application form.
  • Itinerary, Travel and Purpose of travel- a printed travel plan in English. For example, I fly into the city of Ottawa, spend one night there, then rent a car and go to Toronto, then to Vancouver, and then return to Ottawa and fly home. In this case, you do not need to make a reservation for air tickets. All hotel reservations must be made and printed according to the described route. The trip plan + hotel reservation is scanned and saved as one file (less than 4 MB in size).
  • Proof of income - a certificate from work on income or documents for individual entrepreneurs.
  • Proof of Means of Financial Support- financial documents confirming that you have money. You can make a bank statement on the balance of money in your accounts and a statement on the movement of funds. If the certificate is in Russian, you need to make a certified translation (certification from a translator, not from a notary). All certificates must be scanned and saved as one file.
  • Digital Photo - electronic photography. It can be done at any photo studio and asked to dump it on a USB flash drive.
  • Family Information Form - a scan of the questionnaire for the family.
  • Travel History - travel history, that is, your old visas.

If the document upload was successful, the status in the left column will be changed to Provided. When all documents are uploaded, click next and pay the fee using a bank card. The application will be sent, and you will need to wait for its consideration. This will take about 2 weeks. When your Canadian visa is approved, you will receive an email notification. In your personal account, you will need to print a message with approval and, together with your passport, contact the Canada Visa Application Center so that they send it to the Embassy for a visa sticker.
