Types of visas for traveling to Italy

Depending on the purpose of the trip and the length of stay, the type of entry visa you need also depends, for Italy there are only 4 main options:

Type "A" - a transit Schengen visa, it allows you to stay on the territory of an Italian airport if you are traveling to a third country, but it does not allow you to leave its territory even if you have a long waiting period.

Type "B" - at the moment this category is not issued to Russians, previously it was a transit for land transport and was given for a period of 5 days, but now those who will go through Italy to another country will need to apply for a category "C" visa, with this purpose of receipt will need to specify "transit".

Category "C" - the most frequently issued, this type is issued for almost all purposes of travel, depending on this, the validity of the visa also depends, while the total duration of stay or several visits should not exceed three months in half a year (the total time spent in all Schengen zone).

Visa "D" - national, it is issued for a long stay for a period of 90 days, it is issued at the Italian consulate, but at the same time it allows you to pass through other countries of the entire Schengen area.

Conditions for obtaining and issuing visas

As each document has its own purpose and validity period, the conditions for registration and issuance are different for each.

Type "A". When traveling from Russia and having a national civil passport, when flying through Italy, it is possible not to issue a transit visa of this type, subject to the following conditions:

  1. the time of your stay at the airport (that is, the interval between the arrival flight and the onward flight) must not exceed 24 hours;
  2. there is a transit area at the airport of your arrival, which you undertake not to leave while waiting for your next aircraft;
  3. when moving without a transit Schengen visa, you must have boarding documents for the next flight, it is best to fly with one airline that will take care of your stay at the airport and the delivery of luggage to the final destination.

In other cases, it is better to attend to the design of the "transit". To apply for a transit visa, you need to visit the embassy of the country through which you would be traveling or with the help of an online visa center.

Attention! When making a visa-free trip, check in advance the availability and opening hours of the transit zone, not all airports work in this direction around the clock.

Category "C". A visa of this category is perfect for those who have a transit time to a third country of more than 24 hours, as well as tourists who want to see other cities and countries “on the way”. The need to obtain it is for those who prefer the ground mode of transport to aircraft. There are several types of visas in this category:

  • business or "Affari" - issued for travel for work purposes;
  • guest or "Invito" (it is also called "by invitation") is issued when you go to Italy to visit friends or relatives;
  • Tourist or "Turismo" is issued for tourism purposes: sightseeing, museums, hotel stays and attendance at cultural events.

All Schengen visas are divided into three categories:

  1. Single - allows you to visit the Schengen zone once
  2. X-fold - it allows you to visit the Schengen zone a limited number of times which means "X"
  3. Multi-visa - with an unlimited number of trips, makes it possible to travel to any Schengen country an unlimited number of times.

Provided that all documents are authentic and the purpose of your trip is confirmed, it will take 5 working days to apply for a type C visa. However, the maximum period for consideration of extradition reaches 60 days.

Visa category "D"

National visa "D". As its name implies, this visa is issued by the country you plan to travel to, it is available from many countries, even those that are not part of the Schengen agreement. In Italy, they are divided into several main types:

  • student for a long stay;
  • fiance/fiancee visa (also available for wife/husband);
  • long-term business (working);
  • for family reunification;
  • to receive medical assistance.

There are several other types of national visas, but they are issued in exceptional cases. The validity period is initially three months, but then, depending on the reasons for the stay, it can be extended for the required period.
